Materials needed: NoneIII. Teaching Process: i.Unit overviewAn annual report Reading: Ss read extracts from the Millennium Annual Report and answer“Right, Wrong, Doesnt say” comprehension questions. Speaking: Ss work in pairs and tell their partner what an annual report will contain.Describing graphs: Reading: Ss match sentences abput Millennium with information in graph ang bar chart form.Vocabulary: Ss complete word families: infinitive and past simple verb forms and nouns.Language focus: Ss review adjectives and adverbs describing degrees of change.Vocabulary: Ss complete gaps in two short texts about Millenniums performance. Ss focus on prepositions used to describe change.Speaking: Ss work in pairs and take turns to describe a graph or draw their partners graph. (Activity Sheets on pages 125 and 129) Self-study Vocabulary: Matching verbs and diagrams (verbs of movement). Language focus: Gap-fill exercise (prepositions). Vocabulary: Matcing exercises (compound nouns). Exam practice: Matching visuals with sentences. ii.Detailed study of this unitStep 1 An annual report Warmer:T introduces the idea of the annual report and elicits from Ss who the report is written for (shareholders), why (to inform shareholders of the financial situationand hence to reassure /attract) and what type of information it contains (company activities and financial information such as the balance sheet and profit and loss account). T asks Ss to find something is satisfactory for the company (e.g. further steady growth in Britain), which is disappointing for the company (e.g. the effect of the strong pound on growth in Europe), which is a challenge for the company (e.g. changes in distribution).Ex.1 Reading Ss read the text for specific information and answer the Right,Wrong, Doesnt say questions. T points out Ss should refer to both the text andthe visual information. Vocabulary:1. millennium 千禧年2. Rising verbs: rise, increase; nouns: rise, growth; falling verbs: reduce. T asks Ss if they can add any more.Ex.1 ReadingT introduces the activity by telling Ss that the graph and bar chart provide further details about Millenniums performance. Ss need to look at each sentence and first decide which diagram it refers to (the graph shows sales by region and the bar chart shows sales by product range). Ss can then look to see which specific line or bar corresponds to each sentence. T ensure Ss understand recover(恢复), level off(达到平衡稳定), improve, peak.Ex.2 VocabularySs compare their answers in pairs before general feedback. Ss then complete the Dont forget section.Ex.4 GrammarSs fill the gaps in the descriptions of Millenniums net sales and net income.Ex.5 GrammarSs underline the prepositions in Ex.4. Teaching Process: i.Unit overviewMeasuring performanceListening 1: Ss listen to a presentation about a privatised company and complete a bar chart and a graph. Ss then listen again and answer comprehension questions. Laguage focus: Ss find examples of various uses of the present perfect and past simple tenses in the tapescript and describe thr use of these two tenses. Ss match sentence halves to make sentences in the present perfect or past simple. Speaking: Ss do a Find someone who exercise, asking questions aboutprevious experiences. Explaining results: Listening 2: Ss listen to questions asked after the presentation and complete notes about the rail company. Ss then listen and complete multile-choice comprehension questions.Language focus: Ss review language for giving reasons and stating consequences.Speaking: Ss ask for and give reasonns for changes in their company. Self-study Vocabulary: Jumbled phrases (presentation phrases). Language focus: Gap-fill presentation (present perfect / past simple).Exam practice: Matching visuals with sentences. ii.Detailed study of this unitBackground: Great Eastern Railways was bought by FirstGroup as part of the privatisation process of UK railways. The company has now changed its name to First Great eastern. T asks Ss to suggest criteria they would use to judge a railway company (e.g. cleanliness, efficiency, ticket price, punctuality, reliability, safety and good service). T asks Ss whether possible investors would have additional or different criteria (e.g. high and growing volume of business, low costs and high profits, market potential). Ex.1 Listening 1Ss listen to a presentation reporting on performance in the period leading up to privatisation. Ss compare their information in the two diagrams first with their partner and then as a whole group activity. This provides an opportunity to review the language of trends covered in Unit 5a.Ex.2 Listening 1Ss listen for details. T asks Ss to compare the railway companys performance with that of the railway service in their own counntry.Ex.3 GrammarT links the activity with Ex.2 by eliciting from Ss the point that the presentation refers to resent and past activities. In feedback T draws Ss attention to the language used to report the effects of change and elicits some sample sentences for some mini-practice:* Has anything made a big difference to your way of life over the last ten years?* What has improved in the school since you started learning in it?* Has your school made any changes which have resulted in improved learning conditions?Ex.4 GrammarThe main purpose of this exercises is to reinforce the use of the present perfect and past simple. T also reviews some of the trends language practised in Unit 5a.Ex.5 SpeakingT reminds Ss that questions about what people have done in their life can be good conversation starters. T takes Ss through the example pointing out that the star-up question is followed by further follow-up questions which require fairly specific and full responses, usually in th
