S2: Yes, but it did not have a strong beat or tune like modem music. I prefer modern music. S1: I like modern music too, but Bachs patterns really made me feel excited. It made me think of Chinese bound where patterns are all mixed together to make a harmonious whole. S2: Yes, youre right. It did sound like that. When I think of it in that way, I do appreciate it. How did it make you feel though?S1: I felt calm and safe, but I dont know why. S2: It made me feel a little bored. I prefer the energy of pop or rock music. S1: My favourite group is “The Clogs”. S2: Yes, they are certainly energetic! And when Im in an energetic mood I like to listen to them. I like Bachs patterns but it didnt have enough emotion for me. Id prefer my pop music any day. S1: Well, the way the tune kept repeating as the different parts were introduced was very interesting. S2: It seems to me that you like it because youre so good at maths. S1: Maybe thats the reason!LISTENING TEXTTHE MUSIC OF BACHClassical music does not have words. It tries to describe feelings with musical instruments. It is called classical music because it was written at a time when there was no pop or rock music. The music was written to a special pattern. Only the cleverest composers could make beautiful music using this pattern. One of these clever composers was Bach. He was not famous during his life, but became very famous after his death. He worked in a small church and had to write new songs to sing every week. So he composed beautiful choral music. He also wrote music for people to listen to as they left the church. Some of his music is very mathematical with different parts that repeat each other in a very peaceful way. All his music was written for God and some of it is very moving. He never became rich but
