She copied their actions and way of life eating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship. Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired (仰慕;钦佩). Today there are thought to be around 48,000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400 500 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered (put in a situation in which they could be harmed or damaged) by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes. Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. “This is a species (物种) of mammal (哺乳类动物),” said the words below it. “It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good.” The other photo showed a human baby. The words also read: “This is a species of mammal,” but then went on: “It is the most destructive (破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good.” 51. The text mainly talks about _ . A. Diane Fossey B. the gorillas in Rwanda C. the protection of the gorillas D. the film Gorillas in the Mist 52. The expert Diane Fossey is mentioned to _. A. show the differences between ways of study gorillas B. show that she was smarter than others C. introduce the popular film Gorillas in the Mist D. introduce the topic of protecting gorillas53. We can learn from the text that _ . A. Gorillas in the mist was based on Fosseys experiences B. lowland gorillas live longer than mountain gorillas C. King Kong showed us that a gorilla is admirable D. Diane Fossey was murdered by a gorilla 54. What message can we get from the two photos in the magazine? A. Gorillas are mans close friends. B. Both man and the gorilla need to be saved. C. Young gorillas are as lovely as human babies. D. Man should live peacefully with the gorilla. BThe Americans believe that anybody can become President of the United States. In a recent Hollywood comedy (喜剧), that is exactly what happens. Dave Kovic, played by Kevin Kline, is a kind-hearted man who runs a business that finds people jobs. He leads a typical (典型的) American way of life, except for one thing he looks exactly like the President, Bill Mitchell. In fact, the only thing that makes him different from the nations leader is that he is very nice! The president has started using look-alikes during some public appearances. Dave is offered a chance to “serve his country” by becoming one. However, things go wrong. The President becomes very ill and Dave ends up acting as the President forever (永远). Director (导演) Ivan Reitman, who made the popular and successful comedies like Twins, Ghostbusters and Legal Eagles, could have gone for easy laughs by making fun of the American government. Instead, Dave is an attractive (吸引人的) comedy about an ordinary (平凡的) man in extraordinary (非凡的) situations. Kevin Kline gives a double performance (表演) as Dave and the President, and Sigourney Weaver is at her best as his First Lady. The love story that develops between her role and Dave is a real classic (经典).The film is 100% American. However, if youve ever felt that anybody could do a better job running the country than the people in power, then youll enjoy Dave!55. What is the purpose of the text? A. To tell the reader about the American government. B. To discuss the Americans ideas about the President. C. To make a comparison (比较) between Dave and other films. D. To introduce a new film to the reader. 56. Who plays the role of the President in the film? A. Ivan Reitman. B. Kevin Kline. C. Bill Mitchell. D. Sigourney Weaver.57. The underlined word “one” in the 3rd paragraph refers to . A. the President B. the director C. an actor D. a look-alike 58. Which of the following is best supported (证实) by the text?A. The author (作者) makes fun of the President. B. The author thinks highly of the film. C. The author is a fan of Hollywood comedies. D. The author wishes to become the American President.CThink about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat. Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power sources (来源), as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump (抽出) water from deep underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global movement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.59. From the text we know that windmills _.A. were invented by European armiesB. have a history of more than 2,800 yearsC. used to supply power to radio in remote areasD. have rarely been used since electricity was discovered60. What was a new use for wind power in the late l9th century?A. Sailing a boat.B. Producing electricity.C. Grinding wheat into flour.D. Pumping water from underground.61. One of the reasons why wind was rediscovered in the 1970s is that _.A. wind power is cleanerB. it is one of the oldest power sourcesC. it was cheaper to create energy from windD. the supply of coal and gas failed to meet needs62. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?A. The advantages of wind power.B. The design of wind power plants (风力发电厂).C. The worldwide movement to save energy.D. The global trend (趋势) towards producing power from wind.DSongs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday. They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels(血管)dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications. “We have a pretty impressive effect,” said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology(心脏病学)at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. “Blood vessel diameter improved,” he said. “The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise.” A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins. When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots(凝块)that cause heart attacks and strokes. “We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health,” said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans. Millers team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel anxious while the researchers did some tests designed to show blood vessel function. Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they disliked in most cases in this group heavy metal blood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said. Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. “I asked myself what other things make us feel really good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. . . . It makes me feel really good,” he said. Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual. 63. The underlined word dilate(in paragraph 2)is closest in meaning to “_”. A. widen B. move C. changeD. increase64. According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up?A. Taking exercise. B. Listening to unpleasant music. C. Bursting into laughter. D. Taking drugs like statins. 65. It can be inferred from the passage that _. A. blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokesB. music is better than chocolate for your healthC. the style of music has different effects on different peopleD. a persons overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets66. Whats the best title of the passage?A. Pleasant Music Cures B. Research into Blood VesselC. Music and Heart AttackD. Music and HappinessEOne day, my friend Jimmy told me a story. Farmer Joe was in his cart when he was hit by a truckHe decided his injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company (which caused the accident) to court. In court the trucking companys lawyer was questioning Farmer Joe. “Didnt you say, at the same scene of the accident, Im fine?” said the lawyerFarmer Joe responded, “Well, I will tell you what happened.
