Particularly, he is tracking one lion called Marti. Tracking lions on foot may sound dangerous, but Kasaine has been doing it for most of his life. Born in a traditional Maasai family, he understood the beauty and risk of the wildlife. Living with big game forces him to develop a good sense of where animals have been and where they might be going. During his 12-kilometer walks to and from school, he learned how to tell the paw prints of a lion from those of other animals. Growing up, Kasaine knew that improving his tracking abilities would help him avoid other dangerous animals. But maybe Kasaine didnt know that, years later, he would be tracking lions specifically to encounter them and to protect them. Today he leads a small group of wide-eyed tourists over a red sandy path in the reserve, searching for the lion that has left upon it his unmistakable prints. Each year, tens of thousands of tourists come to Kenyas national parks to try to visit the “big five”: elephants, rhinoceros, leopards, buffaloes, and lions. The attraction of these animals to people all over the world means that the nations economy is tied to the protection of its wildlife. If Kenyas wildlife disappears, so does its second-largest source of income. Considering the rapid urban development in Kenya, this isnt unimaginable. In 2016, a study shows that many of the nations most treasured species have fallen to less than one-third of their population counting from just 40 years ago. The number of lions fell, too. In 1998, the nation was home to over 15,000; only about 2,000 remain today. Several experts have predicted they could disappear entirely from the country in the next two decades. Wildlife protection efforts in Kenya must be at the sacrifice of other things. People 一模 南开区2019年高考英语模拟试卷(一) 南开区2019年高考英语模拟试卷(一) 第 8 页 (共 16 页) were forced to leave their land and into smaller surrounding regions. The Swedish furniture companys “future-living” research lab in Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand what people want when it comes to smart furniture. AI is now walking into more aspects of peoples daily lives. Self-driving cars are just around the corner, and AI robots can play and beat the best players of strategy games. As smart home technologies have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from smart electrical outlets (插座) to smart smoke alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, its not surprising that Ikea would be moving in the same direction. Exactly why people would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to them, track their daily movements or offer help is not yet clear. Though Ikeas new survey doesnt directly answer that question, it does provide a hint of what people would feel comfortable with. Most participants wanted a more human-like form of virtual (虚拟的) assistants, as opposed to one that is more robotic. In terms of the ideal gender (性别) of the assistants, the most popular choice was neither male nor female. Few wanted a religious form of AI. Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends that were like them, affirming their own worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably intelligent that could collect data to predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and that could prevent someone from making mistakes. This is not the first time that Ikea has set foot in the field of futuristic technologies. In addition to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust, the furniture giant has also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meals. To decide on how intelligent you want your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can take Ikeas survey online. 一模 南开区2019年高考英语模拟试卷(一) 南开区2019年高考英语模拟试卷(一) 第 10 页 (共 16 页) 46. We read to them, encourage their special talents, and support them when they have problems. If they choose to participate in music or sports, we also help them reach their potential in those areas. These are all good goals. There is, however, an even more important goal. It is a goal more difficult than excellence in arithmetic or soccer or the violin. Parents are responsible for providing their children with a moral compass. They need to nurture and treasure goodness in their children. Every child has the capacity to become a good, decent human being. To fulfill this capacity, children need the guidance and support of parents and other adults. Raising good, moral children is the most important job we will have. What is a good, decent human being? While we may differ on some details, most would agree that respect for others, kindness and caring, honesty and honor, and a reverence (尊重) for life are key. Good, decent human beings are people with a firm sense of direction and purpose a moral compass to guide their lives. Children need our help to develop these characteristics and values. While most people try to act with honor and kindness, doing so consistently is difficult and requires lifelong effort. Goodness is not easy for an adult and it is even more difficult for a child. They do not have the knowledge, experiences, or cognitive skills to understand the impact and consequences of their actions. Reinforcement is sometimes an efficient approach to building positive behavior. The child behaves in a desired way and the parents provide reinforcement. The behavior then typically increases in frequency. This approach works for teaching “Please” and “Thank you”. The new behavior is maintained, because it helps the child get along in the world. Loving, everyday interactions are the beginning of raising moral children. The child who falls and receives adult concern learns how to treat others kindl
