The Scarlet LetterThe novel represents the love and hatred between three individuals. A woman called Hester Prynne, who doesnt love her husband Roger Chillingworth at all , fell in love with a young man called Dimmesdale. They had a great time with each other when Roger was out. However, Hester got pregnant and people in the town cant accept that. She was sentenced to wearing a red A letter in front of her chest forever to show her guilty of adultery. And she chose to suffer the mortification instead of confessing who was the litter girls father. Meanwhile, Dimmesdale was afraid to stand out , admitting that hes Hesters lover and the little girls father, as he had a high position among ministers and was highly respected among his people in town. But his inner was plagued by guilt for a long time. It was set in the 17th century when Hester and Dimmesdates love , which people thought it was sinful , was forbidden .Due to this , people in the town looked down upon and abused Hester. At the same time , Hesters husband was annoyed with her and tried his best to find the little girls father.The faith of hatred controlled him. Chillingworth made up his mind to revenge Dimmesdate, ruining Dimmesdates reputation and let him pay the price. He approached Dimmesdate and acquired Dimmesdates trust. At that time , Hester realized the plot and tried to persuade her lover to leave this terrible place and start a new life. The two lovers had ever decided to flee to Europe,where they can live with their dauthter Pearl as a family .They felt a sense of release there.Because of the long-time pressure , Dimmesdate followed Hesters suggestion. It seemed that they would escape Chillingworths revenge. Unfortunately, the doctor knew the lovers plan and put great pressure on Dimmesdate . The lovers dream of bright future was destroyed before they could see the light. In the end, Dimmesdate cant stand the endless pain any more and committed suicide. In my opinion,the novel tend to be a tragedy. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality, while her lover , Dimmesdate , was quite coward to admit his sins, while he truly loved Hester, in that case, he eventually chose to kill himself. And when Hester died, she was buried next to her lover. The two share a single tombstone , with a deep colored letter A shining brightly. As all his energy and strength had been paid in revenging , Chillingworth lost his meaning of life after Dimmesdate died. At last, this detestable person was taken to the hell. The mainline seems to be around the letter A. The red letter A links three persons lives . In the end , the scarlet “A” letter is all what the story leaves to human.
