Students and parents are invited to spend a whole day in Oxford, attending events, talking to staff and students and getting answers to any questions which remain after examining prospectuses(简章)and websites. To book or not to book Unlike many other university open days, it is not compulsory to book to attend an Oxford open day. Many events are offered on a drop-in basis. What to expect on the day Many departments run their main open day events in the morning so you may choose to start with a visit to your subject department. Here you may attend a talk or sample lecture and chat to tutors and students. Over lunchtime and in the afternoon, colleges offer a range of events, tours and opportunities to meet students and tutors. This is a great time to visit those colleges on your shortlist. Getting around There is no central campus at Oxford University, so events will happen at colleges, departments, museums and libraries all around the city. Most visitors manage this easily on foot, as all open day venues(会场) are within 15 minutes walking distance from the city centre, but it is important that you plan your day in advance taking travel time into account. Many events will be very busy and latecomers will not always be able to join. Please do not try to drive between venues - there is no parking available and traffic on open days is typically extremely heavy. Disabled visitors Anyone with a mobility impairment may borrow a free wheelchair to travel around Oxford city centre via Oxford Shop mobility. To book your wheelchair, call +44 (0) 1865 at least one day in advance. 21. Who are the open days intended for ? A. Graduate students B. Undergraduates C. Tutors D. Staff members22. According to the little background information that was on the copy, the young man who supposedly wrote it fought in the Iraqi War. It is a letter to his former school teacher. Whether it is a true letter or fiction, I found it very inspirational. Dear Sister, By the time you receive this letter, I will no longer be of this earth. I received a severe injury in combat, and the doctor here informed me that I will probably not last through the rest of the week. I am scared, but I am also confident that I am prepared for the last journey. I already wrote my parents, and its possible that I will get to speak to them later. But, I felt that I should write you, too. I want to thank you, Sister, for all you have done for me. The next time you hear from me will be, I pray, in Heaven. Please dont forget me, Sister. Pray for me, and Mom and Dad, too. Until we meet again, I remain your devoted student and friend, Charlie. C It is my daily mission to just get through the day, or I just dont feel like going to school, but maybe today is going to be a good day. This is a struggle for kids and teens who suffer harm at the hands of their bullies(恃强凌弱者). Unfortunately, these are not just random quotes, these were my thoughts when I was younger and Im sure the thoughts of millions of other kids. According to National Education Assn, statistics indicate that about 282,000 students in secondary schools each month are physically attacked and 90% of them report being victims of bullying. It is not just a single problematic concept and it does not only affect a few children, it affects all of us, our community, and it should be considered a school wide problem. How many deadly shootings on school campuses has our nation witnessed in recent years? According to reports, many were tied to a history of school bullying, and revenge was the shooters motivation. Our school systems are continuously negatively affected. According to the American Psychological Assn. , schools where students reported a high rate of bullying had lower scores on standardized tests. This issue is affecting the schools ability to meet federal requirements to receive governmental funding and creates an immense pressure upon school officials to improve their standardized test scores and to keep their schools recognition. Bullying can be related to absence, lower grades and dropping out of school altogether The BRAVE Act policy requires that all types of bullying be reported to the appropriate authorities within seven days. If society wants to end school bullying and carry on stricter polices, they should support this proposed law. Every child and teen needs someone to stand up for them, and it is our duty to see that every community has a great school system that provides a safe environment and offers equal educational protection. 28. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Many students stay home to avoid school due to their bad performances in school. B. Many deadly shootings happened on school campuses because shooters hate school. C. School bullying is more than an individual problem. D. School bullying has little effects on school. 29. Which of the following can be the effect of school bullying?A. Lower grades, safe environment and absenceB. Lower grades, violent crime and absenceC. More dropouts, absence and schools recognitionD. More dropouts, absence and improved test scores30. What should be done to end school bullying?A. the society should support the proposed law. B. parents should care more about their childrenC. schools should punish their school bulliesD students should learn to protect themselves. 31. Whats the purpose of this passage?A. To introduce what school bullying is. B. To explain the horrible effects of school bullying. C. To criticize school bullies. D. To call on the society to end school bullying. D The findings confirm results of existing studies that generally agree on a potential beneficial link between chocolate consumption and heart health. However, the authors stress that further studies are needed to test whether chocolate actually causes this reduction or if it can be explained by some other unmeasured (confounding) factor. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2030, nearly 23. 6 million people will die from heart disease. However, lifestyle and diet are key factors in preventing heart disease, says the paper. A number of recent studies have shown that eating chocolate has a positive influence on human health due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This includes reducing blood pressure and improving insulin sensitivity. However, the evidence about how eating chocolate affects your heart still remains unclear. So, Dr Oscar Franco and colleagues from the University of Cambridge carried out a large scale review of the existing evidence to evaluate the effects of eating chocolate on cardiovascular(心血管) events like heart attack and stroke. They analyzed the results of seven studies, involving over 100,000 participants with and without existing heart disease. For each study, they compared the group with the highest chocolate consumption against the group with the lowest consumption. Five studies reported a beneficial link between higher levels of chocolate consumption and the risk of cardiovascular events. They found that the highest levels of chocolate consumption were associated with a 37% reduction in cardiovascular disease and a 29% reduction in stroke compared with lowest levels. No significant reduction was found in relation to heart failure. The authors say the findings need to be interpreted with caution, in particular because commercially available chocolate is very calorific (around 500 calories for every 100 grams) and eating too much of it could lead Co weight gain, risk of diabetes and heart disease. However, they conclude that given the health benefits of eating chocolate, initiatives to reduce the current fat and sugar content in most chocolate products should be explored. 32. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage? A. There used to be studies about the beneficial link between chocolate consumption and heart health. B. Millions of people will die from heart disease according to the WHO. C. There are still other factors that may reduce the risk of heart disease. D. There is a clear evidence about how eating chocolate affects your heart. 33. What are the possible causes of heart disease? A. Eating chocolate B,Unhealthy diet C. Exercising regularly D. Drinking coffee. 34. What does the underlined word initiatives in the last paragraph mean? A. Plans B. Needs C. Chocolate D. Benefits35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. We should eat less chocolate. B. Chocolate benefits our health C. We should consider the fat and sugar problem. D.
