As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated (躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school because she was too shy to participate. In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the universitys Writers Workshop, however, she felt lonelya Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “creative voice”. “It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didnt think it had anything to do with why I felt so much imbalance in my life, but it had everything to do with it! Thats when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldnt write about.” Cisneros published her first work,TheHouseonMangoStreet, when she was twenty-nine. The book talks about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneros lived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school to graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books of poetry, a childrens book, and a short-story collection.28. What can we know about Cisneros in her childhood? A. Her brothers disliked her. B. Some student volunteers from a group called Marrow tried to convince me to attend an event so I could learn more about it. The word “bone” immediately made me think that donating would be a painful procedure, so I refused. Back then, there was no way I could have known three years later, I would be one of the many people that desperately need a bone marrow donor to save their lives I am currently waiting to be matched with a donor and if I am lucky enough to find a good match, it will be this lovely stranger that saves my life. I received my cancer diagnosis in June. It is only at that time that I realized how ignorant I had been about the bone marrow donation process The process of donating stem cells is actually very simple. In 90of cases donors are asked to donate their blood stem cells, the other 10will give their bone marrowLots of donors say that both these things are virtually pain free, and nothing to be scared about. Being a bone marrow donor should be something to be proud of, as every donor has an opportunity to save someones life! At the moment I know that the doctors are busy searching for a match, and I simply live every day in the hope that there will be a donor right for me. If I have an opportunity for life, I wont waste it When I was in the first year at university, I made the mistake of walking away from becoming a stem cell donor. Please dont make the same mistake that I did. There are so many people out there, including myself, who need your help;and by undergoing a simple, painfree procedure, you could have the chance to proudly say that you saved someones life( )32.
