I sat up, somehow terrified, so I could hear the phone call better. To my surprise, I heard my mom burst into tears.“Get the car, Dean! Andrea has been in a car accident.”We ran every stop sign on the way to the hospital and our tires screeched (发出尖锐刺耳的声音)around every corner. We got to the hospital, but were not allowed to see Andrea. The next morning, after wearing masks, we were allowed to go to the ICU to see Andrea. Well, the least I could say was that everything was injured in her body and she lost all of her memories. It was a fatal accident.Over the next two months, I lived more at the hospital than I did at my house. I watched as Andrea worked so hard to gain back everyday motor skills. She never once complained or pitied herself; her determined spirit was shining through. After two weeks in the ICU and two months of the regular hospital treatment, Andrea was able to come home. She missed several months of school, so it was hard for her to catch up. Andrea had tasks to accomplish, and no matter how hard it was, she stuck with them until the job was done. Though busy with dealing with pain and therapy, she always found time to love and play with me.Ill never forget the impact that this incident made on my life. I admire her strong-willed personality and her determined spirit. Today she is perfectly normal, despite the scars and the pins holding her leg in place. I couldnt ask for a better sister, hero, or best friend.25The writer sat up to hear the call because he _.A. sensed that something terrible had happened.B. might be very concerned about who phoned so late.C. wanted to scold the people who phoned so late.D. was not sure whether the telephone concerned him.26From the underlined sentence in the second paragraph, we can infer that _.A. the family did not obey the traffic rules.B. the writers father was not good at driving.C. the whole family were too anxious to see Andrea.D. their house was very far from the hospital.27_ mainly made the writers sister recover from the car accident.A. The familys encouragement B. Andreas strong willC. The treatment D. The eagerness for study28During the treatment, Andrea _.A. had to give up all her studies. B. stopped playing with the writer.C. refused to be accompanied. D. showed unbelievable strength.CFacial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A womans smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians dont smile enough. In Southeast Asian culture, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile. Our faces show emotions, but we should not attempt to “read” people from another culture as we would “read” someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions. Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly. It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of “reading” the other person incorrectly.29. What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.? A. Love. B. Politeness. C. Joy. D. Thankfulness.30. The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can _ . A. show friendliness to strangers B. be used to hide true feelings C. be used in the wrong places D. show personal habits31. What should we do before attempting to “read” people? A. Learn about their relations with others. B. Understand their cultural backgrounds. C. Find out about their past experience. D. Figure out what they will do next.32. What would be the best title for the test? A. Cultural Differences B. Smiles and Relationship C. Facial Expressiveness D. Habits and EmotionsDan astronaut sounds cool, doesnt it? In space, they get to do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity(重力). However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts cant do because of their weightless environment, and thats very sad. Whats worse, they cant even let their sadness show because its impossible to cry in zero gravity. Of course, astronauts can still produce tears. But crying is much more difficult in space, reported The Atlantic in January. Without gravity, tears dont flow downward out of the eyes like they do here on Earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have nowhere to gothey just stick to your eyes. In May 2020, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks. Tears, he said, dont fall off of your eyes. They just kind of stay there. Besides making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on Earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But thats not the case in space. The space environment dries out astronauts eyes, and when tears suddenly wet the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. My right eye is painful like crazy. Feustel told his teammate during the walk. Since gravity doesnt work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears. Feustel chose to rub his eyes against his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just waitWhen the tears get big enough they simply break free of the eye and float around, astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic. There are lots of small things like crying that we are so used to on Earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a totally different environment, like space. There, astronauts cant talk to each other directly. They also cant eat or drink in normal ways. They cant even burp (打嗝) because there is no gravity to hold the food down in their stomach. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up (呕吐) everything in their stomach, according to the UK National Space Center. Thus, perhaps its only space explorers who can honestly say: Gravity, youre the best.33. What can we conclude from paragraphs 2 and 3?A. Astronauts are unable to feel sad in space. B. Astronauts produce fewer tears in space. C. Tears produced in space flow down more slowly. D. Tears produced in space dont flow downward.34. What can the astronaut do to get rid of the tears? A. Rub his eyes against his helmet to let the tears float forward. B. Rub his eyes by hand to let the tears float around. C. Get the tears big enough to fall off of his eyes. D. Get the tears big enough to break away from his eyes.35. Whats the second-to-last paragraph mainly about? A. Suggestions on how astronauts can stay comfortable in space. B. Other basic things that are difficult to do in space. C. Why burping is impossible in space. D. Things that humans cant do without gravity.第三部分 英语知识运用:完型填空 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。My mother has been a true inspiration to me and changed the way I look at life.
