Doniece Sandoval, a successful businessperson, sees homeless people everywhere. Two years ago, when Sandoval, then 51,happened upon a young woman crying uncontrollably under an overpass at the San Francisco Design Center, she stopped to listen. The woman said sadly “Ill never be clean.” Sandoval realized how hard it is for homeless people to clean their own bodies.Sandoval could have stopped there. She could have written letters to nonprofits(非赢利性组织), or to City Hall, asking someone else to set up more public showers. Instead, she started Lava Mae (Spanish for“wash me”). It is a nonprofit with a new idea: Take old, unused city buses and retrofit(翻新)them with fully functioning showers for homeless people who can use them for nothing. By early next year, the organizations first retrofitted bus will be taken to the streets of San Francisco.“The design of our buses was based on discussions with homeless people,” Sandoval said. For example, many homeless women expressed concern for their safety and privacy while showering. As a result, Sandoval and her team designed two separate bathrooms in each bus, one of which is for persons with disabilities. Each room includes not only a shower, but also a toilet, a sink, and a space to store ones things. Each bus will permit around 30 people to shower on a given day. Once all the buses are running, they will be able to provide more than 2,000 showers per week. This is not a campaign to end homelessness, Sandoval pointed out. Some 10 to 15 percent of the homeless population is chronically(长期地)so, and a shower wont change that. What a shower will do, though, is enable some of them who have lost their dignity(尊严)to retrieve a bit of it, even if only for a few minutes or the few hours that cleanliness lasts.24.What caused Sandoval to start Lava Mae?A.Her success in business.B.Letters from local nonprofits.C.The homeless young womans crying.D.The rising number of homeless people.25.What is the purpose of the organizations buses?A.Raise money to buy the homeless houses.B.Provide a place for the homeless to meet.C.Take the homeless to public showers.D.Offer free showers to the homeless.263.What can we say about Sandoval and her team?A.They are modest.B.They are considerate.C.They are experienced.D.They are strong-willed.27.Which of the following can replace the underlined word retrieve in the last paragraph?A.Get back.B.Think over.C.Wish for.D.Believe in.CBe honest, when was the last time you cried? If youre one of those who say they never cry, the statistics are against you. Women reportedly cry 64 times a year on average, while men shed(流)tears about 17 times. Everyone from professional athletes such as Michael Jordan to politicians like Barack Obama has been caught crying at least once. But why do we cry? Some psychologists (心理学家) believe crying is our bodys response when were helpless. Even if were surprised by happy news, we may still cry. Other psychologists say that when we cry, were trying to get others to help us out when were surprised, sad, angry, scared, or in danger.Therapist (临床专家)Judith Kay Nelson says that our experience with crying as babies may determine how we view crying when were older. Some parents are quick to try and calm (安抚) their kids down whenever they start crying. Those children will likely find crying in their adult years brings a similar comfort. On the other hand, those whose parents became angered by their crying probably wont feel crying has the same calming effect. Many people believe crying can actually make a person feel better. But according to studies, whether it makes us feel better or not depends on the reactions of others. If others react positively (积极地), well feel better. On the contrary(相反), well feel worse.Peoples reactions to crying have a lot to do with the gender(性别)of the person weeping. In the West, its generally acceptable for women to be seen crying. In Britain boys are taught not to cry. Even though people are becoming more enlightened about tears, crying in males is still viewed as a sign of weakness. Philip Hodson, an expert on male emotions (情绪), has a different viewpoint. “In truth, crying isnt weakness; its a relaxation system,” he says. “If we dont use this system, were not being very intelligent.” After all, everybody cries.28.What can be learned about the act of crying from the statistics?A.Everyone, regardless of gender, cries.B.Some people never cry.C.Women often cry for no reason at all.D.Men actually cry more than women.29.Which is the opinion of therapist Judith Kay Nelson?A.The act of crying has a calming effect on all of us.B.Parents shouldnt rush to calm their baby when it cries.C.The way we view crying is shaped by our childhood experience.D.Parents responses to a crying baby will determine its personality type.30.What is said about crying making a person feel better?A.It is completely false.B.It is dependent on a persons age.C.It is true only for men.D.It is influenced by others responses.31.What can we infer about Western cultures from the last paragraph?A.Only intelligent people can relax by crying.B.Crying is still less socially acceptable for males than females.C.Males are now encouraged to express their emotions through crying by their parents.D.British people consider it unhealthy to keep feelings bottled up inside.DLaptop computers are popular throughout the world. People use them on trains and airplanes,in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the treesanywhere at all! Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can help students.
