Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. Whats more, life is always giving new things to the childthings that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done. When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.21According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that .Alife for a child is fairly easy Ba child is always loved whatever he doesCif much is given to a child, he must do something in returnDonly children are interested in life22The main idea of the passage is that .Alife is not enjoyable since each age has some painsByoung men can have the greatest happiness if they work hardCchildhood is the most enjoyable time in ones lifeDone is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life23The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss .Aexamples of successful young men Bhow to build up ones position in societyCjoys and pains of old peopleDwhat to do when one has problems in lifeBChinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a head in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter. However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.Parents can see that their children are very skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that todays children lack self-respect and self-confidence.The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need to be confident, happy and clever.Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.24. Generally speaking, childrens skills _.A. come from their parentsB. have nothing to do with their educationC. may be different from child to childD. have something to do with their marks in the exams25. CAmerican culture is unique because it is formed and developed under certain conditions. The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment, ethnic diversity (多样性;差异) and plural religion, which is quite different from other nations in the world. What is more, these elements are still influencing the American culture. The early immigrants(移民)who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of America from 1607 to 1892. Frontiers were pushed further west. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise, opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism(个人主义), self-reliance, and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage(遗产)of America. In history, people from different countries in the world rushed to America three times. They brought their own culture to America and later on, different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture was formed, a common cultural life with commonly shared values. The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the fight of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism(多元化); almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States. Nowadays, we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current American society. American family is typically parents and their unmarried children. Middle-aged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. The people in America have a very strong desire to start a new life in a new place. Quite a number of people change residences every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his lifetime.28. We can learn from this article that _. A. the population of the United States includes a large variety of ethnic groups B. the early immigrants brought about the unique American culture C. people in the world once rushed to America because of its unique culture D. the American family members dont get along well with each other29. Whats the authors attitude towards American culture? A. He is critical of it. B. He admires it very much. C. He just states the facts. D. He looks down upon it.30The last paragraph is about_.Athe family structure in American societyBthe influence of the three elements in the current American societyCthe new life style of American familyDthe reason why American people like to change residences31.What might be the most suitable title of this article?AThe Immigrants in America BWhy American Culture Is UniqueCThe Influence of American Culture DPlural Religion and American CultureDCan you believe your eyes? A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age.Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment, Doherty and his team tested the perception(观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25. The first group of pictures showed two circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time. Next, both groups were shown a picture where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Heres where the trick lies in. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circlesso it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they werent fooledthey were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy(准确性) as before. Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time. As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the ability to identify visual context. In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles, as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, theyre more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick.32. Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate_. A. childrens and adults eye-sight B. peoples ability to see accurately C. childrens and adults brains D. the influence of peoples age33. When asked to find the larger circle,_. A. children at 6 got it wrong 79 % of the time with no gray ones around B. only adults over 18 got it right 95% of the time with gray ones around C. children at 4 got it right about 79 % of the time with gray ones around D. adults got it right most of the千中高一竞赛英语 第5页 (共10页) time with gray ones around34. According to the passage, we can know that_. A. a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background B. an orange circle appears bigger than a gray one of the same size C. a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size D. a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size35. Why are younger children not fooled?_. A. Because their brain can hardly notice related things together. B. Because older people are influenced by their experience. C. Because peoples eyes become weaker as they grow older. D. Because they are smarter than older children and adults.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。What is the difference between happy people and unhappy people? 36 Read the following list of things that HAPPY people do differently from UNHAPPY people and you will know.
