Keeping people we love in mindCLike every language,American English is full of special expressions, phrases that come from the day-to-day life to the people and develop in their own way.Our expression today is “to face the music”.When someone says, “Well, I guess Ill have to face the music.” It does not mean hes planning to go to the concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, any why you didnt do this or that. Sour music indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us has had to face the music, especially as children. We can all remember fathers angry voice, “I want to talk to you.” and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!The phrase “to face the music” is familiar to every American, young and old. It is at least 100 years old. And where did this expression come from? The first explanation comes from the American novelist, James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on the stage. When they got their cue(提示) to go on, they often said, “Well, its time to face the music.” And that is exactly what they did- facing the orchestra(管弦乐队) which was just below them. And an actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly or perhapshostile, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So the expression “to face the music” came to mean “having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.”Other explanations about the expression go back to the army. When the men faced inspection by their leader, the soldiers would be worried about how well they looked. Was their equipment clean, whinny enough to pass inspection? Still the men had to go out, and face the music of the band, as well as the inspection. What else could they do?Another army explanation is more closely related to the idea of facing the results and accepting the responsibility for something that should not have been done. As, for example, when a man is forced out of the army because he did something terrible, he is dishonored. The band does not play. Only the drums tap a sad, slow beat. The soldier is forced to leave, facing such music as it is and facing the back of his horse.29. How many ways does the phrase “to face the music” comes from?A1B2C3D430. Whats the meaning of “to face the music?”ATo face something far less pleasant.BTo face the stage.CTo face the back of ones horse.DTo face ones leader.31. Which of the following is a situation of facing the music?A.When we are playing basketball B.When we are making a speechC.When we are having a partyD.When we are talking with somebody32. The underlined word “hostile”means “”.AunfriendlyBdislikeCunimportantDunnecessaryDAre some people born clever, and others born stupid?Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some extent(程度) our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius(天才)out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environmentwill develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits ofpersons intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on hisenvironment. This view, now held by most experts, can besupported in a number of ways. It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extentsomething we are born with. The closer theblood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will becompletely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins(同卵双胞胎), they will very likely be asintelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth. Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We mightsend one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We wouldsoon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth playsa part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.33. The writer is in favor of the view that mans intelligence is given to him_.A. at birthB. through educationC. both at birth and through educationD. neither at birth nor through education34. By using the example that two people closer in blood relationship are closer in intelligence the writer wants to prove .A. intelligence can be developed by environmentB. intelligence is given at birthC. intelligence can be developed by experienceD. education plays an important part in the development of education35. A child who lives in rich and varied surroundings turns out higher in intelligence because .A. his family is rich and therefore can afford to develop his intelligenceB. he can break the limits of intelligence fixed at birthC. his family is rich and provides him with various healthy foodD. these surroundings are likely to help him reach the limits of their intelligence第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Holidays with friends can be great fun and a good way of getting to know each other better.Once you are on holiday, the trip can be full of fantastic memories if its planned correctly.
