Kaitlin Riffel was visiting her father at work the Fresno Rescue Mission, a shelter for the homeless and those in need. “I never realized there were people in the world who didnt have a home or food before,” recalled (回忆) Kaitlin, who is now 16. “I knew there was something I had to do about that.”At age 8, she started raising money to build a playground at Rescue the Children, a facility (机构) in Fresno for women and children in need. “It took me two years, but my sisters and I raised $365 (2,520 yuan),” Kaitlin said. “We started small. We knew we wanted to do something to make a difference.” The amount jumped to $80,000 the following year after the girls teamed up with friends, and the playground was built in 2020. It inspired Kaitlin to found Kids on a Mission, a kid-powered nonprofit organization that has helped hundreds of people living in poverty in the US and abroad. The work overseas started when Kaitlin, then 13, visited El Salvador in Central America. There, she saw people starving (挨饿) and families living in shelters made of cardboard (纸板). “The rooms were smaller than my bedroom, but there would be eight people living in each one,” Kaitlin recalled. “We also got to see the rivers that these people were drinking out of, and they contained dirty water.” Providing clean drinking water for people living in poverty is now a focus (焦点) for Kids on a Mission. Children and adult volunteers dig wells (井) and also help orphans (孤儿) by providing food and clothes. “Being able to see how much they are suffering but then to give them food thats life-changing for us,” Kaitlin said.Kids on a Mission is in the process of giving children larger leadership roles within the organization now that Kaitlin is a junior in high school. She may not play as big of a role in the organization if she moves away for college. “This young lady just understands that by giving and having a huge heart, shes not only changing the hearts of people in this community, shes changing the world,” said Jim Yovino, Fresno County Superintendent of Schools.24. In the 200 years since her death, Austens fame has increased from the modest amount she enjoyed in her lifetime to the global fame she receives today. And yet Austens work is so very English that its rather strange she should be so popular all over the world. Her novels are so of their time that its remarkable that shes still appreciated in this very different age. Her most famous works including Pride and Prejudice (傲慢与偏见,1813), the one for which she is most known are set in the world of the English gentry (贵族阶层) in the late 18th century. Most of her fiction is about young women of that time. Women of the gentry could not work, so their chances of happiness or even basic living depended upon finding a husband. This is a very serious subject matter, of course, but the joy of Austens stories is her ability to make wonderful, but also touching, comedy (喜剧) out of something so serious. Take Pride and Prejudice as an example. Elizabeth Bennet is one of six daughters in a family that struggles with money problems. Her mother wants to marry off as many of them as possible. The pushy and annoying (烦人的) Mrs Bennet is one of the great comic characters of English literature. The main plot (情节) of the novel is driven by the love-hate relationship between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, a wealthy aristocrat (贵族). At first, they dont get on. Elizabeth finds Darcy too proud; she feels he thinks he is better than everyone else. She thinks that he looks down upon her family in particular. Darcy, while admiring Elizabeth, believes that she has taken unfairly to him. The pleasure of the novel is reading how these obstacles (障碍) are overcome and how the comical and unexpected ending is achieved. If we think about this story, its obvious why Jane Austen is still popular 200 years after her death, and why readers can still identify with (感同身受) characters from the long dead world of the 18th century English gentry. Although there have been many changes since that time, its still the greatest challenge in life for men and women to find the partner of their dreams.28. It can be concluded from Paragraph 2 that the author _.A. believes Jane Austens works were ahead of their timeB. thinks that everyone should read Jane Austens booksC. has doubts about Jane Austens popularity all over the worldD. is surprised that Jane Austens books are still so famous29. According to the article, Pride and Prejudice _.A. has a sad and unexpected endingB. deals with a serious social issue in a light-hearted wayC. centers on poor peoples struggles in the 18th centuryD. tells readers that everyone can succeed through hard work30. According to the article, Jane Austen remains popular today because _.A. readers enjoy reading love stories about wealthy aristocratsB. readers are attracted by the way people deal with obstacles in the storiesC. readers can always find something new from her novelsD. her works deal with problems many of todays readers still face31. The article is mainly written to _.A. tell us why Jane Austen was chosen to be on the new 10 noteB. introduce the story of Pride and PrejudiceC. explain why Jane Austen is still popular todayD. introduce Jane Austens creative writing styleDDo you always struggle to understand others feelings? Perhaps you should listen to your heart. According to a team of scientists at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, people who are more aware of their own heartbeat are better at understanding others emotions.Researchers have long suspected (怀疑) that this ability is important for understanding others thoughts and feelings. To test this theory, the British team asked 72 volunteers to count their own heartbeats without feeling a pulse (脉搏). This aimed to see how aware they were of the feelings inside their own bodies. Then, the volunteers were shown video clips of social interactions (互动), which tested their ability to read the minds of the characters. During the clips, they were asked questions that required an understanding of the emotions of a certain character for example, “What is Sandra feeling?” In addition, they were asked questions that did not involve any emotions, such as “What is Michael thinking?” They were also asked non-social questions, like “What was the weather like that evening?” The results showed that those who had counted their heartbeats most accurately were better at answering questions relating to the characters emotions. However, there was no link between the ability to feel whats going on inside your body and questions that did not involve any emotions.Punit Shah, lead author of the study, used an example to explain this: If your colleague Michael is rude toward Sandra in public, your body processes (处理) this by increasing your heart rate. This may make you feel anxious and allow you to understand that Sandra is embarrassed . “If you do not feel your heart rate increase, it may reduce your ability to understand that situation and respond (反应) appropriately,” Shah told The Telegraph. Researchers believed their findings mean it could be possible to make people more empathetic by training them to listen to their hearts. This also lends support to the argument that feelings are, at the very least, deeply rooted in physical sensations (感觉).32. What does the new study find?A. People are better at understanding others emotions than thoughts.B. People with quicker heartbeats are more sensitive to others feelings.C. The ability to feel your heartbeat is important for understanding others thoughts.D. Your ability to feel others emotions is related to your ability to feel your own heartbeat.33. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the new study according to the article?A. The volunteers were asked to count their heartbeats while watching video clips.B. Researchers designed emotional, non-emotional and non-social questions.C. The volunteers were required to describe each others thoughts and feelings.D. Researchers trained the volunteers to listen to their hearts and observed them.34. The underlined word “empathetic” in the second-to-last paragraph probably means _.A. willing to accept ideas that are different from your ownB. not influenced in any way by other people or thingsC. being able to understand others feelingsD. willing to help those in trouble35. What can be concluded from the last four paragraphs?A. We react to a situation more slowly when our heart rates increase.B. Physical sensations in our bodies are believed to cause emotional changes.C. Our ability to feel emotions is part of us and cant be changed.D. How we feel has nothing to do with the state of our bodies.第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。You listen to that one song, and you just cant stop dancing to the beat.
