Some evidence suggests that the process was a gradual one in which the Colorado River (which runs through the canyon) slowly cut deeper and deeper into the ground over millions of years. But volcanic rock samples taken from the canyon now suggest that the canyon was down-cut instead.Down-cutting is when a flood of water rushes over a landscape (地形) with enough force to cut deeply into the ground and leaves behind a canyon. Such a flood is usually released when a natural or man-made dam (堤坝) bursts.Robert Webb, a research geologist, says natural dams seem to have formed and broken across the Colorado River several times during the last million years. The dams were built when lava(熔岩) from the eruptions of nearby volcanoes flowed into the river. The lava hardened into hard rocks and blocked the river, causing it to back up and form a lake. Each time the lake grew so huge that it broke the rock dam, releasing a flash flood that furthered the down-cutting process and deepened the canyon.Down-cutting is not just an earthly event. Satellite photos sent back from Mars suggest that the process has happened there, too, say many other researchers. The photos, taken by the Mars Global Surveyor, indicate that an enormous lake existed on Mars 3.5 billion years ago. The lake spilled into a large nearby hole. One edge of the hole broke, releasing a flash flood that quickly carved out a grand canyon. The existence of down-cutting on Mars is just one more piece of evidence that the cold, dry planet was once warm and wet.1. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess(课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss Finlayson, my kindergarten teacher at Princess Elizabeth School near Hamilton, Ontario, had been through first snow days many times in her long career, but I think she may still remember this one.I managed to get into my wool snow pants. But I struggled with my jacket because it didnt fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother, and it made me wonder why I had to wear his ugly clothes. At least my hat and matching scarf were mine, and they were quite pretty. Finally it was time to have Miss Finlayson help me with my boots. In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots.” I didnt realize at the time that this was more a statement of hope than of confidence.I handed her my boots and stuck out my foot. Like most children, I expected the adult to do all the work. After much wiggling and pushing, she managed to get the first one into place and then, with a sigh, worked the second one on too.I announced, “Theyre on the wrong feet.” With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to get the boots off and went through the joyless task of putting them on again. Then I said, “These arent my boots, you know.” As she pulled the offending boots from my feet, she still managed to look both helpful and interested. Once they were off, I said, “They are my brothers boots. My mother makes me wear them, and I hate them!” Somehow, from long years of practice, she managed to act as though I wasnt an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time, and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. With a great sigh of relief, seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, “Now, where are your gloves?”I looked into her eyes and said, “I didnt want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots.”1. According to the passage, the little girl gotfrom her brother.A. the wool snow pants and the jacket B. the jacket and the bootsC. the jacket and the hat D. the boots and the gloves2. What made it so hard for the teacher to help the little girl put her boots on?A. The gloves in the toes of the boots. B. The slowness of the teacher.C. The wrong size of the boots. D. The unwillingness of the girl.3. It can be inferred that before the little girl finally went out to enjoy the first snow of winter, the teacher had to help her put on her boots. A. onceB. twiceC. three timesD. four times4. Which of the following sentences from the text BEST indicates that the teacher is very considerate?A. In her calm, motherly voice she said, “By the end of winter, . . .” (Paragraph 2)B. With the grace that only experience can bring, she struggled to. . . (Paragraph 4)C. . . . , she still managed to look both helpful and interested. (Paragraph 4)D. . . . , she managed to act as though I wasnt an annoying little girl. This idea is dangerous.Science can be a force for evil as well as for good. Its applications can be channeled either way, depending on our decisions. The decisions we make, personally or collectively, will determine the outcomes of science. But here is a real danger. Science is advancing so fast and is so strongly influenced by businesses that we are likely to believe whatever decisions we come to will make little difference. And, rather than fighting for the best possible policies, we may step back and do nothing. Some people go even further. They say that despite the moral and legal objections(反对), whatever is scientifically possible will be donesomewhere, sometime. They believe that science will get out of control in the end. This belief is dangerous too, because it fuels a sense of hopelessness and discourages then from making efforts to build a safer world. In our interconnected world, the lack of agreement in and out of the world of science can lead to the failure to control the use of science. Without a common understanding, the challenges of “controlling” science in this century will be really tough. Take human cloning for example. Despite the general agreement among scientists on its possible huge impact(影响) on traditional moral values, some countries still go ahead with the research and development of its related techniques. The outcomes are hard to predict. Therefore, discussions on how science is applied should be extended far beyond scientific societies. Only through the united efforts of people with hope, can we be fully safe against the misuse of science and can science best serve mankind in the future.1. What can we conclude from the recent study?A. People think highly of science.B. People hold mixed opinions about science.C. Science is getting dangerously out of control.D. Science is used for both good and bad purposes.2. According to the passage, what will happen if we hold that science is getting beyond control?A. The development of science will hopelessly slow down.B. Businesses will have even greater influence on science.C. The public will lose faith in bringing about a bright future.D. People will work more actively to put science under control.3. The discussion should reach beyond scientific societies because.A. scientists have failed to predict the outcomesB. the ties between different areas need strengtheningC. united efforts are necessary for the development of scienceD. people need to work together to prevent the bad use of science4. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Science and its applications bring us many dangers.B. The development of science mostly lies in peoples attitudes.C. Mankind can largely take control of science with their efforts.D. The future of science will be influenced by the dangerous ideas.【参考答案】1-4 BCDB【由山东省2020高考仿真冲刺卷(6)改编】阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。“Long time no see” is a very interesting sentenceWhen I first read this sentence from an American friends email,I laughedI thought it was a perfect example of ChinglishObviously,it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure! Later on,my friend told me that it is a standard American greetingI was too thrilled to believe herHer words could not convince me at allSo I did a research on googlecomTo my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books,or any other possible placesThough it is sort of informal,it is part of the language that Americans use dailyIronically,if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be correctedNobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentenceSome people believe that it came from Charlie Chans moviesIn the 1930s,Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screensDetective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius“Long time no see” was his trademarkSoon after Charlie Chan,“Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these moviesSome scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stewAll kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each otherAmerican Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少数民族的成员) group in the United States,is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stewYou can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and dj vu from French etcThere is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from othersThey will modify it and make it their own,so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant,or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery storeSince Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays,I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the futureIn this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor1The writer himself felt surpr
