Unit 4Pygmalion(60分钟81分)Part A一、阅读理解(共8小题;每小题2分,满分16分)ADear Dad,Today I was at the shopping mall and I spent a lot of time reading the Fathers Day cards. They all had a special message that in some way or another reflected how I feel about you.Yet as I selected and read,it occurred to me that not a single card said what I really want to say to you.Youll soon be 84 years old,Dad,and you and I will have had 55 Fathers Days together.I havent always been with you on Fathers Day but Ive always been with you in my heart. You know,Dad,there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap.You stood on one side of the Great Divide and I on the other. The Father-Daughter Duel shifted into high gear (档位) when you taught me to drive the old Dodge and I decided I would drive the 54 Chevy whether you liked it or not.The police officer who sent me home, after you reported the Chevy stolen, didnt have much tolerance for a stubborn 16-year-old girl, while you were so tolerant about it,Dad,and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life. Our relationship greatly improved when I married a man you liked, and things really turned around when we began making babies right and left.Somewhere along the line, the generation gap disappeared.I suppose I saw us and our relationship as aging together, rather like a fine wine. But the strangest thing happened last week.I was at a stop sign and I watched as you turned the corner in your car.It didnt immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car.It was rather like a slap in the face delivered from out of nowhere.Perhaps I saw your age for the first time that day.I guess what Im trying to say,Dad,is what every son and daughter wants to say to their Dad today.Honoring a father on Fathers Day is about respect and sharing and acceptance and tolerance and giving and taking. Its about loving someone more than words can say,and its wishing that never had to end.I love you,Dad.Love,Jenny1.How did Jenny probably feel on the night she was sent home by the police?A.Disappointed.B.Nervous.C.Guilty.D.Frightened.2.We can learn from the passage that Jenny and her father.A.kept in touch by writing to each otherB.are separated due to the generation gapC.have been getting along very wellD.had a hard time understanding each other3.Why did Jenny feel strange when she saw her father last week?A.She seldom saw him driving that huge car.B.She had never realized his being old and weak.C.She didnt expect to meet with him there.D.She had never seen him driving so slowly before.4.Jenny wrote his father this letter to .A.tell him about their conflictsB.say sorry for her being stubbornC.express her gratitude to himD.remind him of the early incident【文章大意】本文是女儿在父亲节到来之际写给父亲的一封感人至深的信。 根据第四段中的“while you were so tolerant about it,Dad,and I think that was probably what made it the worst night of my life”可知,在被警察送回家的当晚,Jenny因为父亲对她的宽容而心怀愧疚,故选C项。 根据第三段中的“there was a time when we were separated by the generation gap”可知,Jenny和父亲曾因代沟不能很好地了解彼此,故选D项。 根据第六段第三句“It didnt immediately occur to me that it was you because the man driving looked so elderly and fragile behind the wheel of that huge car.” BIn my first week as a graduate student at Cambridge University in 1964,I met with a fellow student, two years ahead of me in his studies;he was unsteady on his feet and spoke with great difficulty. This was Stephen Hawking.I learned that he had a bad disease and might not live long enough even to finish his PhD degree. But,amazingly,he has reached the age of 73.Even mere survival would have been a medical miracle, but of course,he didnt merely survive. He has become arguably the most famous scientist in the world for his brilliant research, for his bestselling books, and, above all,for his astonishing victory over hardship.Stephen received his “death sentence” in 1964,when I thought it was hard for him to go on with his study.Stephen went from Albans School to Oxford University. He was said to be a “lazy” undergraduate, but his brilliance earned him a first-class degree,an “entry ticket” to a research career in Cambridge and a uniquely inspiring achievement.Within a few years of the burst of his disease he was wheelchair-bound,and his speech was so unclear that it could only be understood by those who knew him well. But his scientific career went from strength to strength:he quickly came up with a series of insights into the nature of black holes (then a very new idea) and how the universe began. In 1974 he was elected to the Royal Society at the exceptionally early age of 32.The great advances in science generally involve discovering a link between phenomena that were previously conceptually unconnectedfor instance,Isaac Newton realized that the force making an apple fall to earth was the same as the force that holds the moon and planets in their orbits.Stephens revolutionary idea about a link between gravity and quantum(量子) theory has still not been tested. However,it has been hugely influential;indeed, one of the main achievements of string theory(弦理论) has been to confirm and build on his idea.He has undoubtedly done more than anyone else since Einstein to improve our knowledge of gravity and he is one of the top-ten living theoretical physicists.(2020湖南怀化一模)1.What impressed the author most about Stephen Hawking?A.His brilliant research.B.His bestselling books.C.His serious disease.D.His overcoming difficulties.2.What made Stephen Hawking start his research career at Cambridge?A.His death sentence.B.His “lazy” attitude.C.His above-average talent and ability.D.His rich experience.3.It can be inferred that Stephen Hawking was born .A.in the early 1940sB.in the late 1940sC.in the early 1930sD.in the late 1930s4.What can we learn from the passage?A.Hawkings theory was proved years ago.B.Hawking was not as successful as Newton.C.String theory built on Hawkings idea.D.Hawkings theory has had little influence on others.【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了当代著名的科学家斯蒂芬霍金。 根据第二段最后一句“.and,above all,for his astonishing victory over hardship.” 根据第三段最后一句“In 1974 he was elected to the Royal Society at the exceptionally early age of 32.” 根据最后一段中的“one of the main achievements of string theory has been to confirm and build on his idea”可知,弦理论基于霍金的理论,故C项正确。二、语法填空(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)My Italian 10 percent of the worlds population.1 Most people write and play musical instruments with their right hands. Why are so few people left-handed?A new theory, called “cooperation vs competition” may have the answer.2 When making tools for a right-handed personlike a knifeit was easier if everybody could use the same hand. But some humans wanted to compete instead. So to have an advantage over right-handed people, they would use their left hand to surprise competitors.3 German born American scientist Albert Einstein,British physicist Isaac Newton and British biologist Charles Darwin are some famous “lefties”.At least six US presidents were left-handed,including Barack Obama,Bill Clinton, and Harry Truman.“Lefties” are also often linked with creativity and visual skills. How can this be?Well, the left side of our brain is where we solve problems. The right side of our brain is where we develop creativity.Right-handers tend to use the left side more than the right side.4 “This is why there are more of them in creative areas, such as music, art and writing,” said Alan Searleman,PhD,from St.Lawrence University,New York.5 They tend to have worse memories, often forgetting names and places.A.This means we live in a right-handed world.B.However,its not all good news for left-handers.C.Which means that, lefties should celebrate their differences.D.As humans evolved(进化),we needed to work together to live.E.Yet left-handers tend to use both sides more evenly than right-handers.F.Although there are few left-handed people, some of them are geniuses.G.While the body is symmetrical(对称的) in many ways,in some key areas, its decidedly one-sided.【文章大意】本文是说明文,介绍了左撇子的由来、优势和缺点。
