After my very first visit to Cantata, my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic, but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life. Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25-30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents while were there. You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “life back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible. Whether it was talking to 98-year-old “Hurricane Hilda” about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me. Even the residents who dont have amazing memories make the experience satisfying . I remember visiting Mrs Robinson. She couldnt recall much about her past, but she told me shed never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling (漫谈)”. It made me realize that its the little things that make life worth living. Thats something I wont forget anytime soon. If theres one thing Ive realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, its that presence just being there means more than anything to many of the residents. And despite how busy our lives are, theres always time to make someones day. For me, it feels great to be a source of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, thats all that matters. Its easy to feel like you dont have anything in common with the elderly especially when youre a teenager. But thats not true at all. I hate to be overly clichd (陈词滥调的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, its important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often benefit from teenagers too.21. What do the volunteers do according to the passage? A. They share everything with the residents. B. They play board games and cards with the residents. C. They watch the residents play games. D. They buy gifts for the residents.22. According to the writer, what is the most important thing that volunteers can do for the elderly? A. Playing with them. B. Benefiting from them. C. Helping them. D. Being there with them.23. What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage ? A. We dont have anything in common with the elderly. B. Age is just a number. C. It is important to help the elderly. D. Young adults and the elderly can benefit from each other.BCoral reefs(珊 瑚 礁)are not just beautiful to look at,but also very usefulThey shelter nearly 25 of ocean life and provide food for billions of peopleHowever, like many other species, this amazing ecosystem(生态系统)is in danger of dying out! There are two main reasons for the destructionthe rising carbon dioxide levels caused by global warming as well as human influences like bottom operationWhile not much can be done about the former, the loss caused by the latter can be reducedBottom operation involves dropping nets to the ocean bed and then dragging them up when filled with fishThis action damaged the ocean floor, causing the coral branches to separate from the reefsWhile that is very discouraging, the good news is that if these branches are found quickly, they can be savedAt present, that work is being performed by volunteer divers. But the method has only limited success because they cannot stay long underwater, nor reach depths of over 200 meters where some of the deep-sea coral growsHowever, this is not the case for Coralbotsthe robots that can constantly seek out broken branchesA team of coralbots, each individually working to simple rules will piece together damaged bits of coral, allowing them to regrow. They are programmed to be able to distinguish between other things and the coralThe robots work together in groups, similar to beesIf one coralbot is damaged then the others will still be able to complete the taskDr Lea-Anne Henry said:“The project of using coralbots offers us the possibility to restore(修复)the function of reefsIt is in the final stage of testingOnce ready, the researchers hope to build hundreds of them and use them effectively in the waters off Scotland and then hopefully in the oceans across the world”24Which of the following is a cause of the danger that coral reefs are facing?AThe appearance of new creaturesBThe seriously polluted sea waterCThe activities of volunteer diversDHuman activities like bottom operation25Compared with volunteer divers, coralbots _Acan stay longer underwater Bmust work as bees doCcan distinguish what is coral Dcan never be damaged26What does the underlined word“them”in the last paragraph refer to?ACoralbots BBroken branchesCworking beesDBits of coral27We can infer from the passage that _Abottom operation has affected most underwater creaturesBbroken branches of coral can regrow if saved in timeChundreds of the coralbots have worked well in the oceansDwith the coralbots all damaged coral reefs can be restoredCFilm director James Cameron first became interested in sea exploration when he was a little boyHis love for the ocean grew after he made the 1989 undersea adventure film The Abyss and the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, one of the most successful movies of all timeFollowing that big success,James Cameron decided to put his film career on hold to become an explorerIn 2020,James Cameron made a journey to the deepest spot in the Mariana Trench, known as Challenger DeepAnd now the great journey has been made into a documentary film, named James Camerons Deep-sea Challenger 3DIn James Camerons fantasy films, such as Avatar and The Abyss, the unexplored areas are decorated in colors and full of dangerBut on his dive into Challenger Deep, the reality proved far different:white, deserted and dull “I felt like I had gone to another planet,”Cameron said after returning from the cold and dark place in the Western Pacific Ocean, nearly 7 miles below the surface“I really have a sense of being separated and realize how tiny I am down in this big, black and unexplored place”Cameron captured(获取)the moon-like landscape of the deep sea and documented the sea creatures he observed in the oceanJames Camerons Deepsea Challenger 3D tells the story of Cameron s journeyIt is a film about determination, danger and the oceanS greatest depthsThe movie shows a unique insight into Camerons world when he makes his dream reality and makes history by becoming the first person to travel alone to the deepest point on the planetIts an exciting film and inspiring reminder that our beautiful planet still has a lot to explore28When did James Cameron become interested in the ocean?AWhen he was in his childhoodBAfter his films The Abyss and TitanicCAfter he achieved great Success in moviesDWhen he began to explore the deep sea alone29What is the unexplored ocean like?AColorful and dangerous BBoring and desertedCWhite and attractiveDSmall and dull30What can we know about James Camerons Deep-sea Challenger 3D?AIt is a film about the exploration of ocean creaturesBIt is a story about Camerons film-making dreamCIt aims to attract more people to explore the deep seaDIt tells us about James journey into Challenger Deep31What is the best title for this passage?AThe great dream of a film directorBA film director exploring deep seaCJames Cameron and his documentary filmDThe first person to make films about the deep seaD Vacation is a time for refreshment. In work, we are often called to think. Sometimes, its good to give our brains a rest. Without a break, we may not be able to perform up to our potential. This can be a problem, not only for the employee, but for the employer as well. “The main benefit of vacation is for the worker to come back energized,” says Weaver. “If they havent had a break, then theyre not coming back with new energy. They havent had a chance to step back and get perspective(远景), and come back with renewed enthusiasm.” Long working hours without a break, insecurity(不安)about ones job, and other work-related worries can lead to burnout and stress. Humans can usually adapt to pressure, but not for a limitless amount of time. “It is a problem of relating good workers and having them loyal to the firm while theyre there,” says David Maume, PhD, professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati. He says burnout can also affect employees productivity, creativity, and effectiveness. In addition, high levels of stress are likely to be precursors (前兆) to depression, which can hit both the employer and employees pocketbook. Even people who manage to remain productive at work can have problems. If theyre always at work, then theyre not with their family and friends. If theyre working while on vacation, for the time that theyre on the job, theyre not really present. An unbalanced emphasis on work can strain family and social life. When you come up for air, you may see that youre alone, or that your relationships have gone on without you.32. Whats the main benefit of a vacation? A. The manager can be more creative. B. The worker can step back and get more excited C. The worker can come back with new energy. D. The worker can adapt to pressure much better.33.
