For these countries, economic growth is a very important aim. They want to introduce industries, and so they put few controls on the industries which cause pollution.Cubatao, an industrial town of 85 000 people in Brazil, is an example of the connection between industrial development and pollution. In 1954, Cubatao had no industry. Today it has more than twenty large factories, which produce many pollutants(污染物). The people of the town are suffering from the poisonous matter in their environment and the bad effects can be clearly seen. Birth shortcomings are extremely common. Among children and adults, lung problems are sometimes twelve times more common in Cubatao than in other places. It is true that Brazil, like many other countries, has laws against pollution, but these laws are not enforced strictly enough. It is cheaper for companies to take no notice of the laws and pay the fines(罚款) than to buy the expensive equipment that will reduce the pollution. It is clear, therefore, that economic growth is more important to the government than to the health of the workers. However, the responsibility(责任) does not completely lie with the Brazilian government. The example of Cubatao shows that international companies are not acting in a responsible way either. A number of the factories in the town are owned by large companies from France, Italy, and the U. S. They are doing things in Brazil that they would not be able to do at home. If they caused the same amount of pollution at home, they would be severely(严厉地) punished or even put out of business.56. Why dont developing countries have strict pollution controls?A. If they put stricter controls on industry, fewer companies would build new plants in developing countries.B. Pollution is not a serious problem for developing countries.C. They dont realize the balance of nature will be destroyed by some pollutants.D. The new industries they want to introduce do not cause much pollution.57. What is the authors purpose in taking Cubatao as an example?A. To show that industry can develop very fast in developing countries.B. To show that industrial growth can cause pollution problems for developing countries.C. To show that the pollution problem in Brazil is extremely serious.D. To show that pollution is killing many people and destroying the whole economy of Brazil.58. How is the health of the population of Cubatao?A. There are more heart diseases among people who live near chemical factories.B. Babies there are found not as bright as those who live in other places.C. Their health is affected by pollutants the same way as that of other Brazilians.D. More people suffer from lung diseases because of poisonous matter.59. Why do some foreign companies like to set up their plants in Brazil?A. The investment(投资) environment in Brazil is suitable for them.B. They can act in an irresponsible(不负责任的) way in Brazil because there are no pollution laws there.C. They can make much money because they do not have to pay Brazilian workers much.D. They will not be severely punished if they cause pollution in Brazil.BHappy birthdayThe China National Opera(CNO) will give a concert to celebrate its 50th birthday.Different generations of CNO vocalists, like Li Guangxi, Yao Hong and Ma Mei, will present the concert which will feature both songs from famous Chinese operas like The White-haired Girl and The Hundredth Bride, as well as arias(咏叹调) of such Western opera classics as Madame Butterfly, La Traviata and Rigoletto .Time/date: 7: 30 pm, September 7, 8Location: Tianqiao TheatreTel: 6551 - 4787, 8315 - 6170 Tickets: 60 - 500 yuan (US $7.2 - 60.2)Folk musicA concert will be held to feature some recently composed traditional Chinese music works. The concert, given by the Folk Orchestra of the China Opera and Ballet Theatre, will include such pieces as Memory of Childhood, Memorial Ceremony for God and Wine Song.Time/date: 7: 30 pm, September 13Location: Concert Hall at the National Library of ChinaTel: 6848 - 5462, 6841 9220 Tickets:30 - 200 yuan (US $3.6 - 24.1 )Moon musicA concert of traditional Chinese music will be given on the eve of the Moon Festival which falls on September 21st this year. The concert will feature a number of famous pieces centred on the theme of the moon, such as Moonlight , Spring Night on a Moonlit River and Lofty Mountain and Flowing River.A number of established traditional Chinese music performers, like Zhou Yaokun and Fan Weiqing, will play solos as well as collaborate with the folk music orchestra.Time/date: 7:30 pm, September 21stLocation: Grand Theatre of the Cultural Palace of NationalitiesTel: 6606 - 8888, 6606 999960. The eagle-eyed Cindy follows in the path of other breakthrough toys like Sonys barking RobotAibo, which was the first to popularize voice command in the late 1990s. Cindy takes Aibos innovations(创新) one step beyond: she not only follows instructions but also recognizes shapes, colors and words, and remembers. The effect is a doll that appears to be learning. The toy company which produced Cindy Smart spent a decade trying to see how much human nature it could breathe into an inanimate(无生命的) object. Its engineers began creating minibots that sense light, sounds, and pressure. However, without the sense of sight, their toys seemed to be lacking in one of the abilities that life-forms use to react to their environment. So how do the engineers make a doll actually see? In Cindys case, its a multistep process. When presented a text like “I love you” and asked “Can you read this?” Cindy identifies it as one of 68 preprogrammed commands. Then the inbuilt digital camera scans a 15-degree radius in search of number- or letter-shaped objects. Buried in her stomach, Cindys 16-bit microprocessor compares the text with her database of 700 words. If its a match, “ I love you,” she says.68. But shooting massacres(残杀)cast a tragic shadow over the holiday season in the US. On December 5, a gunman killed eight people, before taking his own life, at a shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska. On December 9, five people, including the gunman, died in two attacks in Colorado. While people are busy trying to discover the killers motives(动机), another issue is causing heated debate in the countrythe weapon the killers used. The US is one of just a few developed Western countries that allow private possession of guns. Any adult can buy army style weapons from a handgun to an AK-47.“The right to own arms is a part of the Constitution(宪法). Many Americans believe it to be a fundamental freedom.”said Jon-athan Haagen, who worked for Teens. When the United States was still a group of colonies, they dealt with a lot of corruption(腐败)from the British.
