It is often difficult to find wood for the fire. People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun. Solar cookers, or ovens, have been used for centuries. A Swiss scientist made the first solar oven in 1767. Today, people are using solar cookers in many countries around the world. People use solar ovens to cook food and to heat drinking water to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms. There are three kinds of solar ovens. The first is a box cooker. It is designed with a special wall that shines or reflects sunlight into the box. Heat gets trapped under a piece of glass or plastic covering the top of the cooker. A box oven is effective for slow cooking of large amounts of food. The second kind of solar oven is a panel cooker. It includes several flat walls, or panels, which directly reflect the suns light onto the food. The food is inside a separate container of plastic or glass that traps heat energy. People can build panel cookers quickly and with very few supplies. They do not cost much. In Kenya, for example, panel cookers are being manufactured for just two dollars. The third kind of solar oven is a parabolic cooker. It has rounded walls that aim sunlight directly into the bottom of the oven. Food cooks quickly in parabolic ovens. However, these cookers are hard to make. They must be re-aimed often to follow the sun. Parabolic cookers can also cause burns and eye injuries if they are not used correctly. You can make solar ovens from boxes or heavy paper. They will not catch fire. Paper burns at 232 degrees Celsius. A solar cooker never gets that hot. Solar ovens cook food at low temperatures over long periods of time. This permits people to leave food to cook while they do other things. To learn more about solar cooking, you can write to Solar Cookers International. But a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US, who also find their parents constantly annoying. The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese moms and dads.Sixty-two per cent of Chinese fathers and 66 per cent of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age. They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of the four countries.Japanese mothers top the list with 76 per cent having high expectations, while 70 per cent of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly comparing them with other kids. The survey of high school students views of life in China, Japan, South Korea and the US, was held in 156 high schools in the four countries. More than 7,000 teenagers were questioned. The survey also found that with the smallest burden, Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. They blame them less, and also receive less criticism than students from the other three countries. However, satisfaction doesnt mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. They get the least praise from their parents and they dont feel able to express their unhappiness to them. Results from the survey show that despite different cultural backgrounds, generation gaps exist in many countries other than China. Its even bigger elsewhere, said Sun Yunxiao, from the China Youth and Children Research Centre. He said that Chinese parents are used to burying their feelings deep in their hearts. This makes their children not want to talk openly with them. This survey shows that both parents and teenagers in China need to work on communicating and understanding each other.Besides their family life, students were also questioned about their opinions on themselves and others in the world.US students displayed more individuality , with 88 per cent agreeing that people should follow their own interests instead of those of others. Koreans were the next most independent, followed by the Chinese and Japanese. But strong ambition is observed in Chinese high schools. Only 41 per cent of high school students are content with an average living, compared with Koreans at 48 per cent, the Japanese at 66 per cent and Americans at 72 per cent.25.Why does the writer think Chinese high school students are much luckier than teenagers in Japan, the Republic of Korea and the US?A. Because Chinese high school students dont have strong ambition.D. Later on,my friend told me that it is a standard American greetingI was too thrilled to believe herHer words could not convince me at allSo I did a research on googlecomTo my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books,or any other possible placesThough it is sort of informal,it is part of the language that Americans use dailyIronically,if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be correctedNobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentenceSome people believe that it came from Charlie Chans moviesIn the 1930s,Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a world wide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screensDetective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius“Long time no see” was his trademarkSoon after Charlie Chan,“Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these moviesSome scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stewAll kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each otherAmerican Chinese, though a minority ethnic group in the United States,is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stewYou can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and dj vu from French etcThere is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from othersThey will modify it and make it their own,so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant,or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery storeSince Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays,I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the futureIn this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor28According to the passage,it can be inferred that _Adetectives translate the phrase “Long time no see”BHollywood made “Long time no see” popularCthe huge pot of stew greatly affects all kinds of languagesDcultures can be changed in the huge pot of stew29The main idea of the passage is that _Asome Chinese expressions are introduced into EnglishByoull not be surprised at a tofu in a restaurant in AmericaCsome American expressions can be used in ChinaDAmerican English keep being enriched from different cultures30According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true?AInformal language sometimes doesnt go with grammar and structureBLanguages are always ruled by grammar and structureC“Long time no see” has been used in at least four media mentioned in the passageDThere are four languages mentioned to be adopted in the American stew自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习59 1-5 CBCAD 6-10 BCABC 11-15 CDCBC16-20 DCACD 21-24 DABD 25-27ADC 28-30 BDB自主练习
