Of course it would . How about I can blast my music while I do the housework ? Then you could go outside or something . ”“ Well , okay , but if it doesnt work out , you will pay the price in a way that you cant imagine . ”From that point on my life has been good . From her early days in Germany to a starring role in Ringling Brothers Circus by way of shipwreck(海滩)and months of pulling wood in India , Modocs story matches her larger-than-life size . The elephants life is tied with that of a boy with whom she was raised from birth and who became her longtime circus partner .The boy , Bram , and the elephant , Modoc , are born at the same time in a small village in Germany . They grow up together , performing their thrilling act , until Modoc is sold to a cruel owner . But the friends refuse to be parted . They come up with a daring plan , and , after surviving a series of disasters , including nearly drowning in the ocean , make their way to America , where they perform in the Ringling Brothers . When Modoc is burned while rescuing children from a circus fire , the brokenhearted friends are forcibly separated .Lewin , who also illustrated for Yukio Tsuchiyas Faithful Elephants and the 1994 Caldecott Honor Book Peppe the Lamplighter by Elisa Bartone , is at his very best here . His gorgeous , watercolor skills show the huge elephant and the rescue scene , but even more amazing in this hardcover are the descriptions of the relationship between the lifelong friends , the exciting public performances , the heartbreaking partings , and the loving reunion years later , which Helfer , who owned Modoc for the last two decades of her life , was able to witness .25. What do we learn about Modoc ?A. It was born an orphan .B. It was a male elephant .C. It grew up in India .D. It knew the boy from birth .26. It can be inferred that Lewin is probably _ .A. an artistB. an elephantC. an authorD. a witness27. What did the writer think of Helfers story ?A. DiscouragingB. RelaxingC. AppealingD. Unreal28. Where will you most probably find this article ? A. In a science book about animals .B. On a website selling books .C. In a political newspaper .D. In a magazine of movie reviews .CIt is simple enough to say that since books have classes-fiction , biography , poetry-we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us . Yet few people ask from books what books can give us . Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds , asking of fiction that it shall be true , of history that it shall results in prejudices . If we could give up all such ideas which are formed in advance of adequate knowledge or experience when we read , that would be an admirable beginning .Do not give command to your author ; try to become him . Be his fellow-worker . If you hang back , and judge and criticize at first , you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read . But if you open your mind as widely as possible , then signs and hints of almost unnoticeable fineness , will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other . Drown yourself in this , familiar yourself with this , and soon you will find that your author is giving you , or attempting to give you , something far more definite . The thirty two chapters of a novel-if we consider how to read a novel first-are an attempt to make something as formed and controlled as a building : but words are more difficult to understand than bricks ; reading is a longer and more complicated process than seeing . Perhaps the surest way to understand the elements of what a fiction writer is doing is not to read : to make your own experiment with the risks and difficulties of words . Recall and describe some event that has left a distinct impression on you-how at the corner of the street , perhaps , you passed two people talking . A tree shook ; an electric light danced ; the tone of the talk was funny , but also tragic ; a whole vision , an entire conception , seemed contained in that moment .29. Whats the problem with peoples attitude towards reading ?A. People dont have a clear picture of how books are classified .B. People only read about the few topics which interest them .C. People start reading a book with subjective point of views .D. People cant tell adequate knowledge from practical experience .30. “ A human being ” in the second paragraph refers to _ .A. a unique character in the book which you readB. the author of the book with all his feelings and ideasC. a completely new self of the reader discovered after readingD. a person with all the qualities described in the book31. What might be the best way to understand a novelist ?A. To do experiments with what is described in the novel .B. To train the power of observation and face dangers .C. To try writing about your own experiences .D. To understand the difference between reading and seeing .32. What might be a suitable title for the passage ?A. How Should One Read a BookB. What Does a Book Try to Tell UsC. The Joy of Reading a BookD.
