Her mouth hung open and a moan (呻吟) escaped every so often, an old woman well beyond her 71 years. In four months this is what she has becomedaily exercising, strong willed, world traveling women has been eaten from the inside out by cancer. Four months! It is a shock thats difficult for me to wrap my brain around. It makes me want to tell everyone I love them. I study her face and will her to open her eyes. What will I say if she does? In the 20 years I have known this woman, and I have struggled to understand her, battled her opinions, endured her criticisms, and loved her son beyond measure. I think of all the times I have wanted to make her disappear. All the times I thought about what I would feel when she was gone. Relief, joy, guilt, or nothing? I think my children saved me from truly hating her. Earlier that day, I watched my 12-year-old son Austin, who she loved fiercely, sitting by her bed and studied her face searching for his beloved “Bubbe” and wondering if shed ever return. He once caught her awake and looked her right in the eye, saying, “I love you, Bubbe. I hope you get better.” His words pierced my heart for I know she is not getting better. Would she hear my silent plea (恳求) and open her eyes? She is so stubborn and never cares what others think. My mind wanders through the past twenty years. I realize how fragile she was when we first met only one month after her husband had died suddenly. Remembering a story she told me about her husband bringing her daffodils makes me see her through his eyes. I think of the love and attention she showers on my sons and I see her through their eyes. Her stories of her childhood and her fathers unstable income make me see why she pushes my husband to make more money.1. According to the passage, the old woman is the authors _. A new study analyzed information from more than 48 million people in England and found that the nearer they lived to the coast, the more likely people were to report good health within the past year.Living near the coast may be associated with better health because the seaside environment reduces stress, the researchers said. They pointed to another British study that found that people who took trips to the coast experienced more feelings of calmness and relaxation than those who visited urban parks or the countryside. The difference from living near the coast was relatively small. But a small effect, when applied to an entire population, can have a substantial impact on public health, said study researcher Ben Wheeler of Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in Exeter, England. However, its too soon to advise people to hit the beach to improve health, Wheeler said. The study only found an association, not a cause-effect link, and its possible that other factors could explain the results. For instance, it could be that people who are wealthier, and therefore healthier, are more able to move to desired locations such as the coast, Wheeler said, a phenomenon known as the migrant effect. But the study did find that the association between coastal living and better health was strongest for those living in the poorest areas, which perhaps indicates that wealth cannot explain the results, Wheeler said.Because the study looked at only Englandan island country in which everyone lives within 72 miles of the coastits not clear whether the findings would apply to other populations. Far from England, a health expert not involved in the study said that while the British research certainly doesnt prove that peoples health and the place they live are linked, its possible that proximity to the seas does something for our bodies. If future studies confirm the results, the next step would be to find out it is what coastal environments that can benefit health. Wheeler said it may then be possible to bring those benefits to people living in other areas, through virtual environments, for instance.5. We can conclude from the passage that _. It is said that emotional intelligence makes up 80 percent of ones success.Ever since the 1995 publication of US writer Daniel Golemans best-seller, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, EQ has been seen by leaders and educators as the solution to many social problems. In some Western countries such as the US, emotional intelligence is now taught widely in secondary, business and medical schools. EQ is important. But our enthusiasm for it has hidden a dark side, says a recent article in The Atlantic. Recent research and studies show that as people improve their emotional skills, they become better at manipulating (操控) others. When someone knows what others are feeling, they can motivate them to act against their own best interests.Does this remind you of those “managers” at pyramid scheme (传销) companies? Hundreds of thousands of otherwise cautious and rational (理性的) people have been brainwashed by their impassioned speeches and become bankrupt as a result.Social scientists have begun to document this dark side of emotional intelligence. A study by the University of Cambridge found that when a leader gave an inspiring speech filled with emotion, the audience was less likely to look over the message and remembered less of the content.Researchers call this the “awestruck effect” (敬畏效应), but it may just as easily be described as the dumbstruck effect, says The Atlantic article. Leaders who master emotions can rob us of our ability to reason. If they have self-serving motives, or their values are out of step with our own, emotional intelligence becomes a weapon of manipulation and the results can be destroyed.Another recent study from Kyoto University shows that people with high interpersonal EQ influence others emotions based on their own goals.A research team led by University College London professor Martin Kilduff shed more light on this dark side of emotional intelligence. According to them, emotional intelligence helps people disguise (伪装) one set of emotions while expressing another for personal gain. Emotionally intelligent people “intentionally shape their emotions to leave favorable impressions of themselves”, Kilduffs team writes in the journal Research in Organizational Behavior. It seems that to better understand the dark side of EQ, we need to look no further than Shakespeares Macbeth or its modern adaption on TV: House of Cards.12. Which of the following statements about EQ is NOT true according to the passage? A. Many westerners have a good knowledge of EQ. B. EQ plays an important role in solving social problems. C. EQ can help you read and understand emotions in yourself and others. D. If a person has a high level of EQ, he will surely succeed in everything.13. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph but one means that the research team _.A. made clear the dark side of EQ B. hid the positive side of EQ C. understand the positive side of EQD. discovered the dark side of EQ 14. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Macbeth was adapted from House of Cards.B. House of Cards helps us understand the dark side of EQ better.C. The dark side of EQ is shown neither in Macbeth nor in House of Cards.D. To understand the dark side of EQ better, wed better not refer to House of Cards and Macbeth.15. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The dark side of EQ.B. The importance of EQ to readers. C. The definition of EQ.D. The positive and negative aspects of EQ. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 16 We are learning from life constantly, as long as we recognise and accept those lessons. When you choose to be a student of life, you open yourself to limitless opportunities.Explore the world. Dont limit yourself to your hometown or to the city you got your first job. 17 It doesnt have to be just one town or one apartment complex. Backpacking may not be for everyone, but its not the only way you can see the world. Travelling doesnt just have to be going overseas but also dropping by many states. Culture exists not just in a country but even in small communities.Acquire new life skills. Maybe its time that you finally learn how to fix a broken faucet or even fix the faulty light in your bathroom. You can finally cross out your bucket list items that have been there forever. Learn how to drive a car or ride a bike. There are definitely things you dont know how to do, and you have a lifetime ahead of you to learn. 18 Be cultured. Watch as many movies and read as many books as possible. And it doesnt mean that you only watch the ones with high ratings from critics. Books and movies are the fruit of the writers or the makers life experiences and understanding of their surroundings. Movies and books are a good look into how people interpret the world. 19 For some individuals, to grow older means to keep your circle of friends down to a few, but that shouldnt stop you from meeting new people. Widen your circle by allowing people into your life and letting them get to know you. Widening your circle to people from all walks of life gives you a bigger and better perspective of the world. Do many firsts. When was the last time you did something for the first time? 20 It can be as simple as watching a movie alone or as big as trying bungee jumping. Doing something for the first time doesnt need to have a life-changing effect. It can be a simple realization that apparently, going to a film screening by yourself isnt so bad. So, there are so much more to learn, especially now that were virtually connected to everyone in the world. As a student of life, its really up to you to use all your resources and make it into something enriching.A. Widen your circle.B. Entertain yourself. C. If you cant think of the answer, maybe you need to go out and try something new.D. Go beyond the place you consider home, because home can be many places. E. You dont always need a profound realization for everything you do. F. Lessons are not limited to our academic studies.G. Its never too late to start learning something new.第二部分:英语知识运用 (共两节,满分45分)第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)Late one night, a thief crept into a wealthy merchants house.
