I moved around the house purposelessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases (行李箱). Earlier that evening, Id received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mothers crying went through my head again and again.Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If theres anything I can do, let me know.” But I didnt know what to ask for.Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.“Ive come to clean your shoes,” he said.I asked him to repeat.“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you. I remember when my father died, it took me hours to clean our shoes for the funeral (葬礼). Give me all your shoes.”I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another. When we returned to clear the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, shining. I couldnt help crying. Early next morning, we left for the airport with all the jobs done. Now whenever I hear of a friend whos lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer,” If theres anything I can do ” Instead I try to think of one specific task that suits that mans need, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel, or house-sitting during the funeral. If the person asks,” How did you know I needed that one?” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”23 . Its a true story. Actually Harvard University is more than one hundred ye ears, older than the United States. In the early 1630s, some people who came to the new land from European countries had a meeting. Some people suggested setting up a university just to improve the quality of their children so that they could better build the new home. Thus, it was born in 1636.Like many other private universities at that time, the Harvard at the early times was often short of money. Few of the local people were rich enough to give large amount of money to the school. Sometimes they even had no money to hire teachers. The school board often had to go to Europe to raise money, but as you can guess, they often came back with their hands empty. In 1638, a man named John Harvard, passed away. He left his library and half of his money to the university, which was the biggest donation (捐赠) ever since its birth. Therefore, the university was named after his name. Today, you can find a statue of John Harvard standing in front of the University Hall in Harvard Yard, and it is perhaps the universitys best known sign.Like other world famous universities, Harvard also has many colleges, and Harvard Business School is one of them. There is a saying in education that Harvard is the crown (王冠) of American education and Harvard Business School is the shining diamond on it.32 . Not sure? Try living with your eyes closed for a few years.Blind people are better at locating sounds than people who can see, a new study says, without the benefits of vision the ears seem to work much better Previous studies have shown that blind people are better than others at reaching out and touching the sources of sounds that are close by. Researchers from the University of Montreal wanted to see if blind people were also better at locating sounds that are far away.Twenty-three blind people participated in the study. All had been sightless for at least 20 years. Fourteen of them had lost their vision before age 11. The rest went blind after age 16. The experiment also included 10 people who could see but were wearing blind-folds.In one task, volunteers had to pick the direction of a sound coming from about 3 metres away. When the sound was in front of them or slightly off center in front, both groups performed equally well. When sounds came from the side or the back, however, the blind group performed much better than the blindfolded group. The participants(参与者)who had been blind since childhood did slightly better than those who lost their sight later.“Recognizing(认识)the locations of distant sounds can be a matter of life-or-death for blind people,” say the researchers. Crossing the street, for instance, is much harder when you cant see the cars coming.Still, the researchers were surprised by how well the blind participants did, especially those who went blind after age 16. In another experiment, the scientists also found that parts of the brain that normally deal with visual(视觉的)information became active in locating sound in the people who were blind by age 11. These brain parts didnt show sound-location activity in the other group of blind people or in the sighted people. The scientists now want to learn more about the working of brains of “late-onset” (迟发性的)blind people.37 .
