Roads wear out too, and they often need repairing. But new research by a pair of teens suggests the rubber from worn-out tires could lengthen the lifetime of asphalt (沥青) pavement. Also roads made with this material might need fewer patches (补丁).The young researchers presented their findings in May, 2020, as finalists at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The 64th annual Intel ISEF shows some of the best high school science projects from around the globe. Many roads are made with asphalt, which requires much petroleum. But Jordan is a country that has very few oil wells or other sources of petroleum, notes Mohammad Salameh, who is a 10th-grader at the International School in Amman, Jordan. For Jordan, having to import most of the countrys petroleum adds greatly to its cost, the teen notes. The extra expense means that theres less money to build and maintain roads. That has resulted in poorer quality roads. As a result, those roads need to be patched almost constantly. Therefore, 16-year-old Mohammad and his research partner, 15-year-old classmate Adam Belaid, came up with the idea of adding rubber to asphalt. But that rubber can come from old tires. Even a worn-out tire contains much rubber, which means the material should be plentiful, says Mohammad. Drivers in Jordan replaced 9 million tons of tires between 2020 and 2020, and only 0.3% of that rubber was recycled. That leaves much rubber that could possibly go into road construction. But first the teens had to show adding rubber to asphalt resulted in better roads. To test their idea, they created several different asphalt-rubber recipes. They also tried out different temperatures at which the mix was heated. And their tests suggested that when the surfacing material includes 8% rubber, it should hold up for 10 to 15 years of traffic instead of the normal 5 years. And their recipe should reduce the need for patching worn areas from once a year, to maybe once every 57 years in the future21. It can be learnt from the passage that .A. roads that contain no rubber tend to be only used for six yearsB. most of the roads in Jordan are made with rubber at presentC. the International Science and Engineering Fair started in 2020D. only 27,000 tons of tires were recycled in Jordan between 2020 and 202022. What made the two teenagers think of carrying out the research?A. Frequent road repairs in Jordan.B. Their interest in recycling old tires.C. The slowdown in the Jordanian economy.D. Their desire to replace petroleum with something.23. The purpose of the passage is to .A. list some facts about the 64th annual Intel ISEFB. prove the importance of rubber to road constructionC. introduce a recent study by two teenagers from JordanD. convince readers of teenagers ability of doing researchBNearly 22 percent of Japans population are already 65 years old or older. The rapidly aging population has caused many problems: a labor shortage, tax shortage and financial difficulties in paying health bills and pensions of large numbers of the elderly. Moreover, a growing number of older Japanese are spending their golden years away from the care traditionally provided by children and grandchildren. Thats where cutting-edge technology steps in.This technology is creating a care providing market. Businessmen are using cutting-edge technology to create products to care for the countrys growing elderly population. They have been producing everything from easy-entry cars to remote-controlled beds. Old people in Japan can expect to be served food by a robot. They can also ride a voice-recognition wheelchair or even possibly hire a robot nurse. At a home-care exhibition in Tokyo, many new products were shown. Buyers crowded round a product called My Spoon Feeding Robot. It can help elderly or disabled people to eat with a spoon-and-fork-fitted arm. Operating a stick with his chin, the designer moved the arm toward a block of soft tofu, skillfully getting the fork to break off a small piece. The arm then returned to a set position in front of his mouth, allowing him to bite and swallow.“Its all about making people able to help themselves. We want to give the elderly control over their own lives,” the designer said. The company has already sold 300 of the feeding robots, which costs $3500 each. There is also a car designed for easy entry. It is mainly for people who have to use wheelchairs or those who have difficulty walking. Its slogan is, “A car thats more patient than your daughter.”24. The underlined word “cutting-edge” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “_”.A. old B. advanced C. cost-saving D. cheap25. The rapid aging population in Japan _.A. are interested in inventing robot nursesB. causes a decrease in labor force and an increase in taxC. strengthens the relationship between family membersD. promotes the development of Japans care providing technology26. My Spoon Feeding Robot _.A. has not come on the market yetB. cannot use a forkC. helps the elderly eatD. can operate a stick with its arm27. What is the passage mainly talking about?A. The development of technology in Japan.B. An invention - My Spoon Feeding RobotC. Robots can help elderly Japanese.D. The rapidly aging population in Japan.CThere is a great need to train cultural diversity for teachers, given that the classrooms of today consist of diverse groups of students. The most direct way of training teachers is to hold as many interactive (互动的) activities in the class. One of the simplest and most effective activities is a game called “I Am”. In this game, each student is asked to write something about their name and provide other details about the namelike the meaning, how they got their name, and if they think they are anything like their name. This will provide an insight into the culture and background of that student. In another activity, all the students sit in a circle. Each student is called aside by the teacher and asked to pick two students from the circle whom they know nothing about. They are then asked to state a few things that they think about them, like their background, what their parents do, etc. Make sure that these questions are about the cultural background. It is important that these questions are predetermined so that it does not get too personal or offensive. Once each student is done giving their account, they are asked to come forward and answer the questions on the list. In no way is the choice of classmate and student divulged. This may help student realize what they had assumed about their classmates wasnt necessarily true. This opens up the minds of the students and changes their attitude to make them more accepting of their diversity.28. Why is it necessary for teachers to gain cultural diversity training?A. More and more students become active.B. There are more students from diverse cultures.C. Its teachers duty to make students more diverse.D. The students want their teacher to have international background.29. Which of the following statements will most probably be heard in the “I am” activity?A. Our teacher treats us as good friends.B. My family loves each other very much.C. My name Alexander represents bravery.D. I am from another city far away from here.30.The underlined word “divulged” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “”.A. connected B. fitted C. equipped D. uncovered31. Whats the biggest advantage of the activities?A. Making students accept cultural diversity.B. Improving students future performances.C. Helping teachers handle teaching problems.D. Helping teachers to remember students problems.DThere is an agreement that we are depriving (剥夺) this current generation of young kids a chance to do what they are not only equipped to do, but need to dotake some risks. And were not talking about unimportant ones, either. Kids need to learn how to handle “dangerous” things like power tools, make fires, and have the benefits that occur from “playing with knives”.Hanna Rosin focuses on some of the misguided reasons we are raising “The Overprotected Kid” in the Atlantic. She says our concerns with kids safety go beyond the actual risks.I agree with this new opinion. For many kids growing up today, there are fewer and fewer opportunities to practice risk taking. Risk taking is an important skillevery kid needs to learn, how to do something that they are a little scared of doing because they havent done it before. Part of the reason for “overprotection” is certainly the parental fear. This is certainly evident in terms of the physical environment.I claim that much of the parental concern isnt driven by fear of injuryits more about concern with success.“Play” may be in fact less dangerous than our structured sportsyet we focus more on the risk because we dont see the benefit. And this broader concern with success is not limited to the playground or sports field. “Overprotection” certainly happens in the social and academic fields as well, as phrases like “helicopter parent” have become mainstream. There is plenty of social and academic risk taking that can also be prevented because of the perception of risk.32.According to paragraph 1, the author thinks todays children .A. arent as happy as their parentsB. ignore the benefits from taking risksC. live an overprotected life due to parental careD. hate to take some risks for their development33. Which of the following would Hanna Rosin agree with?A. Not all kids can play on the playground alone.B. The review of the statistics details the danger of injury.C. Parents should take care of the kids in case they are lost.D. Parents concerns with kids safety arent actually necessary mostly.34. Which of the following are “helicopter parents” according to the passage?A. Those who help their children take responsibility for their own action.B. Those who find out the important elements of a healthy development.C. Those who give advice on how to find their own sense of creativity.D. Those who offer any help whenever their children are in need.35.The authors main purpose in writing the passage is to .A. encourage kids to take risks they can handleB. attract more parents to learn key practical skillsC. persuade people to have fun in raising the youngD. advise people to stay away from helicopter parents第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Restaurant chefs, home cooks, and foodies people who love good food often say that we eat with all of our senses.First, we use our sense of sight to appreciate how a meal is presented, either on a dinner plate or a dining table. 36 Additionally, with our sense of smell, we breathe in the mouth-watering smell rising up from the meal. Finally, we enjoy the food with our sense of taste. But does sound also affect our dinning experience? A new report from researchers at Brigham Young University said yes. Hearing is often called “ the forgotten food sense , ” says Ryan Elder , and assistant professor of marketing at Brigham Young University . 37 On the other hand, watching loud television or listening to loud music while eating can hide such noises. And this could lead to overeating.During the experiments, the test subjects wore headphones and listened to noise at either a high or low audio level. 38 The study found that subjects who listened to the higher volume noise ate more pretzels than those with the low audio levels.Elder says that when hiding the sounds of eating, like when you watch television or listen to loud music while eating, we take away the sense of hearing. 39 The researchers are calling this the “ crunch(咬碎声) effect ” , which they admit may not seem like much at one meal . But over a week, a month, or a year, all that food can really add up. So hearing the sound of eating does reduce the amount of food you consume.40 Hearing the noises of your meal as you eat could also help you to be more mindful of the experience and perhaps help you to enjoy it more.A. Then researchers gave them a hard snack: pretzels.B. But besides not overeating, there is another benefit.C. And this may cause you to eat more than you would normally.D. In fact, beautiful food is healthier than food that doesnt look appealing.E. He notes that soft and sweet sound is thought to enhance(增加) the taste of food.F.
