He checked the weather forecast. A violent storm was coming , but it sounded like his small town wouldnt be hit too hard. But Eppes, a firefighter, had clearly known the power of these huge storms from experiences.“Do you know where the flashlights (手电) are?” he asked his wife. Danielle. Just then, thunder was all around them. The moment he turned the flashlight on, the house lights went off. A second later, the kitchen windows were broken. Eppes and Danielle ran to their boys who were still sleeping in their bedroom.“Get up, get up, R.J.!” Eppes shouted, waving his flashlight. The sleepy boy moved to the edge of the bed. Eppes held out his arms and ordered his son to jump. He was too late. The roof was torn down. R.J. was buried under the pieces.“Ive lost him,” Eppes thought. Quickly, he hurried to Joel to shield him. Glass, wood, and plaster (灰泥 ) hit them. Then something huge, heavy maybe the washing machineknocked into him. He hurt his arms, but he still held the flashlight in one hand. After a long period, the wind began to die down. Eppes found himself standing in the ruins of his home. Darkness lay all about him. Then he thought he saw a shape moving straight toward him. It was R.J., guided home by the light of his fathers flashlight. At the hospital later, R.J. described what had happened to him. “I rushed out when the wall started moving. I was scared. My mom and dad were gone. Pieces of glass hit my back, and something hit my neck really hard.”R.J. had been raised up into the air by the wind and dropped back to the ground. The stories, written by pupils aged 7 to 13, show how fairy cakes are referred to as cupcakes and a dinner jacket has become a tuxedo(晚礼服). “Smart” is now often used as “clever”.Chris Evans, whose radio show runs the competition, said the results were “interesting”, adding, “Whod have thought that the popular American musician Simon Cowell and Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi would be among the famous names that come up in childrens work repeatedly?”But according to the study, pupils are let down by some basic knowledge of English. Children are not familiar with simple spellings such as “does” and “clothes” and struggle to use the past tense correctly.Researchers also found that punctuation (标点) was underused, especially semi-colons and speech marks. Some did not know how to use capital letters. However, exclamation (感叹) marks were overused. Researchers found 35,171 examples in total, with some young writers using five at a time.Popular US fiction(小说) such as the Twilight vampire novels and films is thought to be fuelling the increasing use of American vocabulary and spelling. Modern technology is also influential. Out of almost 300 references to “blackberry”, nearly half refer to mobile phones. Characters frequently “google” for information or use “apps”. But the researchers found a wealth of imaginative and inventive ideas.Fears that texting was corrupting childrens written work were unfound, they said, with youngsters only using text-expressions when they were referring to a text message.Samantha Armstrong, of the OUP childrens dictionaries division, said, “We should accept the facts calmly. Perhaps we are catching a glimpse(一瞥) of the language of the future.”35. The study of Oxford University Press shows that . A. The subject has proved surprisingly fertile. “I didnt expect that there would be so many artists in the showbut I discovered that just about every artist who ever lived has made a tree work,” says the arts journalist Linda Yablonsky, who has organised the show. There are works by artists including Charles Ray, Tacita Dean, and Zoe Leonard, as well as by a notable figure of the 1960s music scene, Rory McEwen, whose hyperrealist(超现实的) paintings are also on show at Kew Gardens in London. Some artists have made new works for the exhibition, including Oscar Tuazon, who has created a concrete and steel image of trees. Other works, such as a 10-foot-tall prototype(原型) for a tree by Ugo Rondinone, are on show for the first time. There is a range of photographic works, including Sally Galls Thirst, 2001.The focus on trees was partly inspired by an interview with the artist Cyprien Gaillard that Yablonsky conducted two days before Glenn Fuhrman, the founder of the Flag Art Foundation, asked her to organise a show. Gaillard had shown Yablonsky a limited-edition artists book that he had made of his night photographs of trees in Los Angeles. “They were very moody and strange and quite beautiful, nearly abstract,” Yablonsky says. “I kept thinking about Tacita Deans painted tree photographs and postcards, and wondered what other artists had done.”“I see trees everywhere now, in almost every exhibition,” Yablonsky says. “A tree is a figure in a landscape; each one is different. Theyre magnificent when theyre full or tall or old and extremely poignant (令人悲伤的)when they are bare or dead. They die in the winter and come alive in the spring, which gives them a aspect of life that is uplifting. They provide oxygen for us to breathe; we cant live without them. And now I cant live without tree art.”43. What was the subject of the exhibition? A. Trees. B. Artists. C. Photographs. D. Art. 44. What were on show in the exhibition? A. Some tree works and photographic works B. Some tree works made by some artists. C. Some photographic works. D. Some trees photographs.45. The exhibition was held to . A. let people know more about art works B. enable Yablonsky to live with tree art C. make people enjoy tree art D. get people to know the importance of trees46. The underlined word “uplifting” in the last paragraph means . A. satisfying B. interesting C. discouraging D. inspiring EMadagascar, an island nation located off the southeastern coast of Africa, is home to some of the most unusual animals in the world. But many of these species may be in danger. Bushes and low-lying plants have started to take up too much space on the forest floor, providing fuel for wildfires. So scientists are now using giant tortoises(龟) to help prevent the possible forest fires and thereby help the native wildlife in Madagascar. Why? Long ago, giant tortoises lived all over Madagascar. Like bulldozers(推土机), they ate up many plants that grew on the forest floor. They also spread the seeds of native treeskeeping the ecosystem in check. But when humans settled on the island just over 2,000 years ago, hunting and cutting caused the giant tortoises native to the islandalong with dozens of other rare species to become extinct. Now, scientists plan to ship 300 close relatives of the extinct Madagascar tortoises to the island. They hope that these tortoises will spread the seeds of native plants and chow down on the extra bushesjust like their relatives did long ago.To find the relatives, scientists studied the fossils of two spccies of Madagascars extinct giant tortoises. They discovered that the extinct species were actually very similar to another group of giant tortoises that live about 250 miles away on the Aldabra Atoll, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. When the tortoises first arrive in Madagascar, they will live in an area closed off from the rest of the wildlife. There, researchers will watch the tortoises every move to see how they react to the native plants. If all goes well, the tortoises will be released to the wild.Similar practice has been successful in other places. Take the island of Rodrigues, located east of Madagascar, for example. Seven years ago, tortoises were brought there. Already, they are spreading seeds and keeping the shrubs(灌木) from taking over. If the same thing works in Madagascar, the giant
