New contracts for exploration will be signed in non-protected areas of Alaska and in the Gulf of Mexico. In his weekly speech, the President insisted the US could reduce its need for imported oil and improve safety. Using his speech to tell Americans that he understood their concerns about rising prices, President Obama focused particularly on the price of fuel, which has risen in recent months. US consumers have historically enjoyed cheap fuel, but have seen prices rise in recent months even though US oil production in 2020 reached its highest level for seven years. Although the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2020 was serious, Mr Obama said the Gulf remained a key part of the countrys future energy supply. The Presidents proposals (议案) come after Republicans (共和党人) introduced a series of proposals that would expand and speed up oil and gas production. The White House has criticized the Republican proposals for safety reasons, but Mr Obama was clear in his speech that he felt safety and environmental standards could be maintained even though production might rise. “I believe that we should continue to expand oil production in America even as we increase safety and environmental standards,” he said. “As a nation, we should be investing in the clean, renewable sources of energy that are the solution to high gas prices.” Mr Obama has previously called for a step-change in energy policy, saying the US must move towards getting 80% of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2035.39. Our children were upstairs unpacking, and I was looking out of the window at my father moving around mysteriously on the front lawn. “What are you doing out there?” I called to him.He looked up, smiling, “Im making you a surprise.” I thought it could be just about anything. When we were kids, he always created something surprising for us. Today, however, Dad would say no more, and caught up in the business of our new life, I eventually forgot about his surprise.Until one gloomy day the next March when I glanced out of the window, I saw a dot of blue across the yard. I headed outside for a closer look. They were crocuses (番红花) throughout the front lawnblue, yellow and my favorite pink, with little faces moving up and down in the cold wind. I remembered the things Dad secretly planted last autumn. He knew how the darkness and dullness of winter always got me down. What could have been more perfectly timely to my needs? My fathers crocuses bloomed (开花) each spring for the next five seasons, always bringing the same assurance: Hard times are almost over. Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon. Then a spring came with only half the usual blooms and the next spring there were none. I missed the crocuses, so I would ask Dad to come over and plant new bulbs. But I never did. He died suddenly one October day. My family were in deep sorrow, leaning on our faith. On a spring afternoon four years later, I was driving back when I felt depressed. It was Dads birthday, and I found myself thinking about him. This was not unusualmy family often talked about him, remembering how he lived up to his faith. Suddenly I slowed as I turned into our driveway. I stopped and stared at the lawn. There on the muddy grass with small piles of melting snow, bravely waving in the wind, was one pink crocus. How could a flower bloom from a bulb more than 18 years ago, one that hadnt bloomed in over a decade? But there was the crocus. Tears filled my eyes as I realized its significance.Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon. The pink crocus bloomed for only a day, but it built my faith for a lifetime.43According to the first three paragraphs, we learn that _.Ait kept bothering the author not knowing what the surprise wasBthe author was unpacking when her father was making the surpriseCit was not the first time that the authors father had made a surpriseDthe author knew what the surprise was because she knew her father44Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?AThe author usually felt depressed in the season of winter.BThe authors father planted the crocuses to lift her low spirits.CThe author often thought about her father after he died.DThe crocuses bloomed each spring before her father died.45The authors father should be best described as _.Aa parttime worker who loved flowersBa kindhearted man who lived with faithCa fulltime gardener with skillful handsDan ordinary man with doubts in his life46What can be the best title for the passage?ACrocusesMy Source of FaithBCrocusesFathers SurpriseCA Pink CrocusMy MemoryDCrocuses in BlossomMy FavoriteEYou cant always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belvacv doesnt think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. Thats why he created lampbrella, a lamp post with its own rain sensing umbrella. The designer says he come up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street ad saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬)built into a street lamp.” he said. The lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand. Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, theres also a 360motion sensor on the biberglass street lamp which detects whether anyones using the lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed. According to the designer, the lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed, so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians. Besides, it would be grounded to protect from possible lighting strike. Each lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being installed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take lampbrella into production, Belyacv says he recently introduced his creation one Moscow Department, and insists this creation could be installed on my street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter. 47. For what purpose did Belyacv create the lampbrella?A. To predict a heavy rain B. To check the weather forecast C. To prot
