It is an occasion when we can watch those creatures of our fantasies, film stars, behave like human beings. Female stars are expected to spend a large amount of money on their gowns, for it is a good chance for them to show themselves to the whole world. Winning an Oscar means you have the respect of your peers. To the producers, it means large amounts of money, as millions more people will want to see it. The original intention of the Oscars was to “raise the cultural, educational and scientific standards of film”. There are awards in many different categories, the most important of which are Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. The Oscar was called Oscar probably because of the words of the Academy librarian Margaret Hernick, whose uncle was named Oscar. It is often believed that the award is because the film producers have spent huge amounts of money on publicity, in order to influence Academy members to vote for their film.
