Unit 6 Good manners 同步练习A“The pen is more powerful than the sword.” There have been many writers who use their pens to fight things that were wrong. Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of them. She was born in the U.S.A. in 1811. One of her books not only made her famous but has been described as one that excited the world, and was helpful in causing a civil war and freeing the slaves. The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern States and finally won. This book that shook the world was called Uncle Toms Cubin(汤姆叔叔的小屋). There was a time when every English-speaking man, woman, and child had read this novel that did so much to stop slavery. Not many people read it today, but it is still very interesting, if only to show how a warm-hearted writer can arouse(唤起)peoples sympathies(同情心). The author herself had neither been to the Southern States nor seen a slave. The Southern Americans were very angry at the book, which they said did not at all represent(描述)the true state of affairs, but the Northern Americans were wildly excited over it, and were so inspired by it that they were ready to go to war to set the slaves free.1.The text wants to tell us _.Aevery English-speaking person has read Uncle Toms CabinBUncle Toms Cabin is very frighteningCthose who dont speak English cannot have read Uncle toms CabinDthe book Uncle Toms Cabin did a great deal in the American War2.How old was Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe when her world-famous book was published?AAbout sixty years old. We are taught “How are you? Im fine, thank you. And you?” And nearly every student can remember it very well. But in the US, people say “How are you?” instead of “And you?” because people want to be polite. The problem is that this is still too formal. People say “Hi! How is it going?” or “Hey! Whats up?” or “Never better.” Or “Hello! How are you doing?”, and so on. Between close friends, people often answer “Busy.” Or “Tired.” Or “Barely.” That means they are telling you the truth. However, Americans use “so-so” Just when they talk about food, drink, or an activity or party instead of using it in other ways. For example “What about the food and drinks? It was just so-so.” This cannot be used to describe personal(个人的)things. If so “Not bad” is often used. When close friends thank you for your help, they say “Thanks.” Or “Thanks a lot.” Or “I appreciate it.” Or “Thats very kind of you.” And then what can we answer? We can say “All right.” Or “Any time.” Or “Dont mention it.” Or “My pleasure.” Or “Sure(应该的)”.So when we communicate(交流)with each other, wed better speak idiomatic(地道的)English so that we can make our conversation easier.1From the passage, we know _.Athere is no difference between “How is it going?” and “And you?”Bpeople can say “so-so” at any occasions(场合)Cclose friend often say “Thank you” when they thank someone for helpDits important for learners of English to know about the habits(习惯)of expressing themselves2How are you getting on with your study? _.AVery well BSo-so CVery good DAll right3Thats very kind of you. _.AAny time BIt doesnt matter CYou are welcome DThats a problem4When we communicate with others in English, wed better _.Awatch them carefullyBlisten carefullyCspeak very good EnglishDtry to avoid(避免)Chinese English5When we talk with others in English, we had better _.Aspeak formal English Bspeak informal EnglishCspeak proper English in different situations Dnot speak English参考
