Warming upWarming up by discussingHow are you, boys and girls? Today we shall read about smoking. Do you smoke? Do your parents smoke? Lets fall into groups of four and discuss about the health effects of smoking. Lets try to list all the possible problems that might be caused by smoking.Warming up by brainstormingSmoking cigarettes are the number one cause of death in the China. That is more than any other kind of death- any accidents, suicides, murders, diseases, and even most wars.Although people understand that smoking is harmful to their health they still keep on smoking. The question is how to quit smoking now. Now lets take a brainstorming to find ways to quit smoking, to stopping that awful habit.Decide to look and feel healthy.Decide to quit smoking now!II. Pre-readingFive Keys for QuittingBefore you read the text I shall tell you how I managed to quit smoking years ago. I think there are five keys for quitting smoking, that is: Get ready, Get support, Learn new skills and behaviors, Get medication and use it correctly, Be prepared for relapse or difficult situations.III. Reading1. Reading aloud to the recordingPlease turn to page 19. Read the four discussion questions first. Keep them in mind. Now listen to and read to the recording of the text ADVICE FROM GRANDAD 爷爷的忠告. Pay attention to your pronunciation, making your reading aloud as close to the readers as possible.2. Underlining and jotting down expressionsReading the text and jotting down useful expressions is a very effective way to learn English. Keep a running list of new expressions, and review it several times throughout the day. The key to learning vocabulary in a foreign language is review.Try using your new words and expressions or phrases with your classmates or teachers. Ask them to repeat the words you have learned, so you can get used to hearing the ways other people pronounce them.Now start reading the text and jotting down the expressions useful to you.Useful phrases from ADVICE FROM GRANDADsit under a tree, at the end of, return from a bike ride, be fit to, be due to, bringto, give up, become addicted to, by the way, become accustomed to., feel happy or relaxed, become sick, bad-tempered, do the same thing over and over again, become mentally/ physically addicted to, feel good, know about harmful effects of smoking, do terrible damage to, become pregnant, affect the health of non-smokers, smell terrible, turn yellow, enjoy sport, be taken off, quit smoking, findon the Internet, decide on, make a list of, get benefits from, at the end of the day, throw away the last packet of cigarettes, prepare oneself, be determined, feel like ing, smoke a cigarette, remindthat, break the habit, go for a walk, clean ones teeth, drink water, clean the house, keep ones mind busy, feel nervous/ stressed, reach for, try deep breathing, learn some relaxation exercises, feel bad 3. Retelling the text storyFirst lets have a question and answer period to solve problems you might have with the text.Now lets go on to retell the letter with the help of the phrases and expressions underlined and jotted down.4.Reading beyond the textNext I am going to show you an article from the Internet about teens smoking. Read and take notes of the facts useful to you.Teens can get addicted after smoking onceBy Deborah CondonAdolescents may be more vulnerable to the addictive effects of nicotine, with some experiencing symptoms of addiction after smoking for the very first time, the results of new research suggest.Scientists followed hundreds of children, aged 12 and 13, for 30 months. They found that, of 332 who tried smoking, 40% showed signs of addiction. This was despite the fact that some of them had only tried smoking once.Furthermore, of the 237 children who said that they had inhaled, over 50% displayed symptoms of addiction.The study also found that girls took, on average, just three weeks to become addicted from the time when they started smoking occasionally. This was significantly faster than the time it took boys to become addicted, with some taking up to six months from the time that they started smoking occasionally.The researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School believe that teenagers may be more vulnerable to nicotine addiction due to the fact that their brains are still developing.For some victims of tobacco, their unfortunate fates may have been cast with their first few cigarettes, the researchers said.The results of this study can be found in the journal, Tobacco Control.Almost half of all Irish children have tried a cigarette and 50% of todays young smokers will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases, according to the Department of Health.IV. Closing down by testingTo end the period let go on to do something interesting.
