According to the Guardian, the Antarctic has registered (登记) a new high temperature for the first time on record, prompting fears of climate instability(不稳定性) in the worlds iciest place. On Feb 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75 on the icy continent of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the previous record of 19.8, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.This record-breaking reading was taken at a monitoring (监测) station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian soil scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was documented during a 20-year-long research project. The focus of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永久冻土) within the region. Permafrost is soil that stays frozen for at least two years. Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer stressed that “We cant use this to anticipate (预测) climatic changes in the future. Its simply a signal that something different is happening in that area.”But in fact, the last high temperature reading was in the 19 range. These higher temperatures can cause ice and glaciers (冰川) in Antarctic regions to melt. The Antarctic peninsula (半岛) the long finger of land(狭长地带) that stretches towards Argentina(阿根廷)is most dramatically affected. Scientists saw glaciers that have retreated by more than 100 meters in Discovery Bay where the snow melted in little more than a week, leaving dark exposed rock. This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can threaten the safety of coastal areas. Its believed to be behind an alarming decline of more than 50 percent in chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) colonies, which are dependent on sea ice.Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to fix.26 . But imagine being able to print something that is three-dimensional 3D. Would you like to design an object, such as a cup or a toy, and then “print” it out? Well, there is the technology to help you do thisto produce even a whole house!3D printers might be the size of a suitcase, or even a small room, depending on the object they are made to produce. You make a 3D design on your computer and send it to the printer. Inside the machine, the object you have designed is made as one object. So how is this being used? In medicine, 3D printing is often used to make heath. The dential takes a 3D image, something like a photo of the real tooth and a new one is printed in that exact shape. Then you might also want to print a mobile phone cover or a special pair of shoes.Scientists are taking this even further. They have made a bicycle that just needs a chain and two lyres (轮胎). Car pans (壳) have been made for a while and now they are even making a body of a whole car!But imagine how printing a whole house might help people build houses. A Chinese company has made houses using a giant 3D printer. They use a mixture that includes concrete (混凝土) and recycled building waste. This is a good thing as it helps the environment. They believe that their method of printing houses is cheaper, faster, less dusty and less noisy than the ordinary(普通的) way that houses are built. It seems that 3D printing technology will change our world, and China is leading the way.30 . Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world dont realize its very important. As a result, sleep problems are quite common. In 2011, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Among the people, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, 31.6 percent were diagnosed (诊断) with insomnia (失眠). In addition, 30.7 percent of them have visited doctors for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.The survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some even cant fall asleep and often wake up in the middle of the night. The main reasons of the problems are pressures (压力) from school or work and a fast pace (节奏) of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also affect sleep and cause poor quality sleep. The survey also found that large numbers of people find it hard to sleep at night. The short term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating (专心). If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase. There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same timeeach day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.Getting a good nights sleep is important for everyone.
