One of my fathers friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernies place. Wed sit on the edge of the dock(码头), feet dangling(摇晃), and got ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then wed bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heartthe reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seedfree partand throw away the rest. Bernie was my fathers idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernies wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you dont take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and enjoy lifes small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson Id learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could. Well, Ive relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. Thats the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away. ( )1. Why people eat different kind of food. CHave you ever heard someone use the phrase “ once in a blue moon”? People use this expression to describe something that they do not do very often. For example, someone might say that he tries to avoid eating sweets because they are unhealthy, but will eat chocolate “ once in a blue moon”. Or someone who does not usually like to go to the beach might say “I visit the shore once in a blue moon.” While many people use this phrase, not everyone knows the meaning behind it.The first thing to know is that the moon itself is never really blue. This is just an expression. In fact, the phrase “ blue moon” has to do with the shape of the moon, not the color. As the moon travels around the earth, it appears to change shape. We associate certain names with certain shapes of the moon. For example, when we can see a small part of the moon it is called a crescent(月牙) moon. A crescent is a shape that looks like the tip of a fingernail(指甲).When we cannot see the moon at all, it is called a new moon. When we can see the whole moon is called a full moon. Usually, there is only one full moon every month. Sometimes, however there will be two full moons in one month. When this happens, the second full moon is called a blue moon. Over the next 20 years, there will only be 15 blue moons. As you can see, a blue moon is a very rare(罕见的)event. This fact has led people to use the expression “once in a blue moon” to describe other very rare events in their lives.( ) 11. How does reading this message make you feel? Why did the sender use all capital(大写) letters? Was he or she angry, or did that person just forget to turn off the Caps Lock on the computer? The fact is, this e-mail is usually the way that people shout online. Knowing when and when not to use capital letters is just one example of online etiquette(网上礼仪) often called netiquette. Virginia Sheas book, Netiquette, lists a basic set of dos and donts for communicating suitably with others on the Internet. Following are some of her advice.First, always remember that you are sending messages to a real person, not just to a computer. Dont type anything that you wouldnt say to someones face. Also, remember that the person who receives your message cannot hear the tone of your voice, or see the expression on your face, so make sure your meaning is clear.Dont do anything online that you wouldnt do in real life. Dont take anything without paying for it, unless its free. Dont use information that someone else has written, and say its yours. Dont read other peoples e-mailyou wouldnt open your next-door neighbors mailbox and open their mail, right? Do share your knowledge of the Internet with others. Its a big place with lots of information, and there are many new things to discover(发现).Remember that people judge(判断) you by your words as well as your actions, so do try to write well. Good writing
