But life there changed between 2007 and 2008 when Taliban leaders started making demands and threats. They forced women to stay home and banned girls from attending school. Malala remembers her feelings, “I really had two choices. One was to remain silent and be killed, and the second was to speak up and then be killed. I chose the second one.” Using a fake name, she wrote a diary about the difficulties under the Taliban, which was published on the Internet at age 11. At the same time, she used her real name and began making public speeches in favor of education. Months later Malala was identified as the diarys author. By 2012 Pakistans army had forced most of the Taliban out of Swat and restored (恢复) order. Life was returning to normal, and girls were returning to school. Malalas life, though, was about to take an unexpected turn. On October 9, 2012, Malala and her fellow students got on the bus after school to go home. Minutes later, two men boarded the bus and asked, “Who is Malala?” Without realizing what they were doing, the students turned and looked at their friend, showing who she was. The men shot Malala in the head, and Malala was badlyinjured. Fortunately, Malala had an operation and survived. But Garvey, who is overweight, has no interest in sports. TIME for Kids had an interview with Grimes. What was the inspiration for your book, Garveys Choice? Id fallen in love with this ancient poetry form, called tanka (短歌). I wondered if it would be possible to write a novel completely in tanka. I play with different forms of poetry, just to try something new and see where I can take it. Why did you tell a story of overweight kids? Ive written, and heard, lots of stories about girls dealing with health problems, but I dont remember reading any about boys. We dont see it shown in entertainment. I thought, “This is a subject I want to talk about.” Im always looking for stories that explore topics that arent being explored elsewhere. Garvey finally stands up to his father. Do you think there are times when standing up to a parent is necessary? Its often the case that a young person is drawn to a particular area, and under-stands they have a particular gift. And a parent, because theyre so full of their own expectations for their child, can often miss it. Then it is up to the child to say, “Hey, look! This is who I am.” What did writing mean to you when you were growing up? Reading and writing were my survival tools when I was a kid. It was the way I worked things out, how I dealt with anger, or disappointment. In my early teens, I started reading a lot of poetry, and I wanted to create works for others to read and share. Then writing became a career goal. 1.What made Grimes want to write Garveys Choice? A. An ancient novel.B. One of her poems. C. Her interest in sports.D. It helped her become a professional poet. B “I grew up with a single mom, raised by my mom and my grandmother. Nobody in my family graduated high school,” Brittany Amano says. Her grandmother helped out as much as she could. But the family had to rely on the Hawaii Foodbank. “I saw how hunger and homelessness affected my family,” Brittany says. “The experience made me want to give hope to others in the same situation.” At the age of 12, she formed a non-profit (非营利的) organization. Her goal was to raise $10,000 before she graduated from high school. She ended up raising more than $500,000 in four years. So far, theyve been able to raise about $4 million and helped more than 750,000 people throughout the state. We must go this way.” She dragged Sylvia at a run down the slope (斜坡) and across a wide open ground towards a little pavilion (亭子) that stood on a small round hill against some dark trees. They had now put the river between them and the cry of the wolves, which was comforting, but Sylvia was worried to see that Bonnie was once more leading her away from the house. “Where are we going, Bonnie?” she breathed noisily, fighting bravely to keep up. “I have a friend who lives in the woods,” Bonnie returned. “I only hope he is not away. Let us rest a moment here.” They stood struggling to get their breath in the temple of Hermes, which was no more than a roof supported on thin columns (柱子). “Oh, Bonnie, look, look!” Sylvia cried in uncontrollable alarm, pointing back the way they had come. Through the dusk they could just see two small black dots ( 圆 点 ) at the top of the slope, which were soon joined by several others. After a moment all these dots began coursing quickly down the hillside in their direction. “There is not a moment to be lost,” Bonnie said. “Hurry up, hurry up!” Half-leading, half-supporting the exhausted Sylvia, she took her through the deepening woods. Here Bonnie seemed to know her way almost by following her noise. She passed from tree to tree, scanning ( 扫 视 ) them, for signs left by her friend. “Here we are!” she cried with thankfulness, and, to Sylvias astonishment, she put her fingers to her lips and made a 第 8 页 共 21 页 long, clear whistle (口哨). More surprising still, she was answered by another whistle which seemed to come from the very ground under their feet. A clear, ringing voice called, “Here, Miss Bonnie! B A single teacher can reach thousands of students in an online course, opening up a world of knowledge to anyone with an internet connection. This limitless reach also offers opportunities for school districts that need to save money, by reducing the number of teachers. It can help high achievers in need of more advanced coursework than their districts provide. This is especially true in small districts that offer few traditional courses for students working ahead of their grades. But there is something wrong with it. In reality, students who complete these courses tend to do quite poorly on tests of academic ( 学术 的) knowledge. This suggests that these online courses often give students an easy passing grade without teaching them very much. A study in Maine and Vermont examined the effect of online courses on eighth graders with strong math skills in schools that didnt offer face-to-face math classes. Students were divided between online math and the standard math offered in traditional classes. Both groups of students were tested at the end of the school year. The online students did better than those in standard classrooms. They were also twice as likely to complete advanced math later in highschool. Scholars examined the performance of hundreds of thousands of students at DeVry University. DeVry offers online and face-to-face versions (版本) of all its courses, using the same textbooks, assessments, homework and teaching materials in each course. Even though the courses are seemingly the same, the students who attend online do worse. 第 9 页 共 21 页 The effects are lasting, with online students more likely to drop out of college altogether. Hardest hit are those who entered the online class with low grades. Work by researchers in many other colleges is in line with the DeVry findings: The weakest students are hurt most by the online learning. For those with strong academic skills, by contrast (相比之下), online learning can open up amazing opportunities. Online education is still in its youth. Many ways of learning are possible, and some may benefit students with deep and various needs. As of now, however, the evidence is clear. For advanced learners, online classes are a good choice, but academically challenged students need a classroom with a teachers support. 5.Whats Paragraph 1 mainly about? A.The benefits of online courses. B.The decrease in school teachers. C.The educational conditions in poor areas. D.The combination of online and traditional courses. 6.What did the study in Maine and Vermont find? A.Traditional students were more likely to do better in math. B.Both groups had little difference in their performance. C.Online students tend to fail in their higher education. D.Online students did better than traditional ones. 7.Why did the findings of DeVry differ from Maine and Vermonts? A.DeVry invited differentteachers. B.DeVry involved differentclasses. C.DeVry used different teaching methods. D.DeVry chose students of different levels. 8.What does the author think of online education? A. It suits good students.B. It has been fully developed. C. It is useful to poor students.D. It should be banned in schools. 第 10 页 共 21 页 (四)(四) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C 和和 D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A I have been asked to explain how I came to write Charlottes Web. Well, I like animals, and it would be strange if I failed to write about them. Animals are a weakness with me, and when I got a place in the country I was quite sure animals would appear, and they did. As for Charlotte herself, I had never paid much attention to spiders ( 蜘 蛛 ) until a few years ago. Once you begin watching spiders, you dont have time for much else the world is really loaded with them. Spiders are skilful, amusing and useful and only in rare cases has anybody ever been harmed by a spider. One cold October evening I was lucky enough to see Aranea Cavatica. I did not know her name at the time, but I admired her, and later Mr. Willis J. Gertsch of the American Museum of Natural History told me her name. When I saw that she was spinning her egg sac ( 卵 囊 ) and fixing to become a mother, I got a stepladder ( 折 梯 ) and a light and had an excellent view of the whole business. A few days later, when it was time to return to New York, not wishing to part with my spider, I cut the sac off from the underside of the roof, put the spider and sac in a candy box, and carried them to town. I threw the box on my dresser. Some weeks later I was surprised and pleased to see Charlottes daughters coming out of the air holes in the cover of the box. They hung tiny lines from my brush to my mirror and scissors. They were very busy. We all lived together happily for a couple of weeks, and then somebody whose duty it was to dust my dresser refused, and I broke up the show. At the present time, three of Charlottes granddaughters are at the foot of the stairs, where the
