QSoE, Queens University, Kingston ON xx Summer 2014 Tailored Program 3/28/2014 TAILORED PROGRAM PROPOSAL Todays Date: March 28, 2014 Proposal Acceptance Deadline: May 1, 2014 Name of Participating Universities: Xx University and Queens University School of English (QSoE) Length of Program: Three weeks Program Dates: July 21- August 8, 2014 Overview: The three-week tailored program for Xx University will provide advanced-level students with an excellent opportunity to increase their English language proficiency and sharpen their research skills as they compare and contrast Chinese and Canadian culture in the university and the broader community. This program prepares students linguistically for successful study at a Canadian University and offers them the memorable cross-cultural experience of living in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, a UNESCO world heritage destination. S C H O O L O F E N G L I S H Queens University Kingston, Ontario, Canada K7L 3N6 Tel 613 533-2472 Fax 613 533-6809 soequeensu.ca www.queensu.ca/qsoe QSoE, Queens University, Kingston ON xx Summer 2014 Tailored Program 3/28/2014 Please note: 1.This proposal and the conditions of this program are based on a minimum of 10 students. 2.The program fee would be significantly reduced for a minimum group of 15 and significantly reduced again for a minimum group of 20. 3.Students will be divided into two classes for this program should the number of participants reach 21 or more students. Included in Fees: Program Fee: 42 hours of English language instruction in a Core Class, with a thematic focus on cross- cultural analysis and a skills focus on critical thinking. Individualized, advanced-level English language instruction will focus on the language structures and vocabulary needed to conduct authentic academic research (3 hours a day/5 days a week/3 weeks total, less 1 holiday); 9 hours of a Language Lab class, including intensive academic listening activities and pronunciation practice for comprehensibility (1.5 hours a class/2 classes a week/3 weeks total); Three guided excursions to local attractions. Each activity will be staffed by QSoE Monitors and will give students the opportunity to experience the cultural and geographic diversity of Kingston and area. Guided excursions will include a boat cruise of the 1000 Islands, a visit to Fort Henry and a tour of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. Excursions are subject to availability; agreed upon substitutions may be made. The chaperone is welcome to join these excursions at no extra cost. Two weekend distance trips are included; the first is a two-day trip to Ottawa and Montreal and the second is a three-day trip to Toronto and Niagara Falls. Each trip will be staffed by a QSoE Monitors and will give students the opportunity to experience the cultural and geographic diversity of Canada outside of the classroom. Trips will include at least one group meal (per trip), hotel or residence accommodations, and admission to several popular attractions as well as free time at shopping destinations. The chaperone is welcome to join the trips at no extra cost. Access to optional Socio-Cultural Program activities happening on evenings and weekends such as games, sports, movies, coffee talk and exercise. Xx students can meet Queens students and other QSoE students at these activities. Access to Queens Athletic and Recreation Center and all libraries on campus Access to City of Kingston Transit (free bus service with student card) Accommodation Options: Homestay Fee: Twenty nights of accommodations with a QSoE homestay host (20 x $30 = $600) oIncludes food for all meals o$100 Administration fee (for a total fee of $700) oAdd a fully refundable deposit of $350, returned to each student before departure Basic Residence Fee: Twenty nights of accommodations in a basic residence. oBasic residence does not have air conditioning nor kitchen facilities. oBathrooms are private (one user at a time) but co-ed and shared with several others. oDoes not include any meals or cooking facilities. QSoE, Queens University, Kingston ON xx Summer 2014 Tailored Program 3/28/2014 oIf choosing this residence option, students must be prepared to purchase their foods fully prepared at cafeterias or restaurants. Premium Residence Fee: Twenty nights of accommodation in a premium residence. oPremium residence has air-conditioning and semi-private bathrooms (one-user at a time) but only shared between two same-gender users. oDoes not include any meals; however, kitchens are available for food preparation. University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) Fee: Queens University requires enrolment in UHIP for all international students/staff/visitors staying on campus for three or more weeks. For a detailed description of UHIP coverage please see http:/quic.queensu.ca/incoming/uhip.asp Airport Transfer Fee: A chartered bus with a QSoE staff person will pick up the group from the Toronto airport upon arrival and then drop off the group at the end of the program. The Welcome and Farewell fee is included in the airport transfer fee; the Welcome and Farewell fee means a QSoE staff person and the homestay hosts will meet and pick-up the students at the School of English upon their arrival. On the departure day, the homestay hosts will return the students to the QSoE office, where a QSoE staff person will be on hand to oversee departure on the bus back to Toronto. Courier Fee: The letters of acceptance for the students will be couriered to Xx when ready. Students will be asked to sign a waiver form permitting QSoE to share their academic information with Xx University. Copies of the students final reports will be provided to the chaperone at the end of the program. Excluded Expenses: Textbooks (approximately $50) All personal expenses All travel costs to and from Kingston including airfare (with the exception of the bus to and from Kingston) Chaperone accommodations QSoE, Queens University, Kingston ON xx Summer 2014 Tailored Program 3/28/2014 Successful participants in all programs at Queens School of English will meet the following requirements: Attendance Attendance in all classes is mandatory. Preparation Adequate preparation is required for all classes. Participation Appropriate participation and collaboration are required in all classes. Performance Students are expected to actively engage in their learning. English-Only Rule Participants in all Queens School of English courses and programs must use English-only in class, on campus and during school-organized activities for the duration of their program.
