1、James Thurber James Grover Thurber (December 8, 1894 November 2, 1961) was an American cartoonist, author, journalist, playwright, and celebrated wit. Thurber was best known for his cartoons and short stories, published mainly in The New Yorker magazine and collected in his numerous books. One of th

Finally he broke that life by the advice of his doctor. Junius took boarding with a widow

7、and her children. After some time, with the townsfolk beginning to talk about the single man living with the widow for a long time, Junius married his landlord and became the head of the farm. The widow released her working man and put Junius to work on the farm, but Junius, having become accustomed

8、 to lazy, ignored his duty. Eventually the farm fell into disrepaired and the family went broken. Without enough food or clothes, the widow and her children died of the disease. Only Junius and his son by the widow survived. Junius, with his child and a hired man as lazy as he, spent time reading bo

9、oks and having fanciful discussions , never actually working. Because of this, his son was raised in rags, though well trained to independent thought and flights of the imagination. Despite his appearance and the intentions of the other children to torment him, the child was well received at school

10、and indeed became a leader of the children. So influenced by him , the other children began to spurn their shoes and tear holes in their clothes. Except the teacher, who found the man and his son were romantically dignified, the rest of the community had nothing but scorn for Junius and sympathy for

11、 his child. The story ended with members of the school board attempting to give the child some shoes and new clothes as a present. Realizing the regard he was held by society, he became ashamed. At last, the teacher saw Junius and his son clean and well dressed on their way back to San Francisco whe
