15、Todothis,theyexaminedhowbrainactivitychangeswhenwetrytoremembera“target”memory,thatis,whenwetrytorecallsomethingveryspecific,atthesametimeastryingtoremembersomethingsimilar(a“competing”memory).Participantsweretaughttoassociateasingleword(say,thewordsand)withtwodifferentimagessuchasoneofMarilynMonroe
16、andtheotherofahat.Theyfoundthatasthetargetmemorywasrecalledmoreoften,brainactivityforitincreased.Meanwhile,brainactivityforthecompetingmemorysimultaneouslyweakened.Thischangewasmostprominentinregionsnearthefrontofthebrain,suchastheprefrontalcortex,ratherthankeymemorystructuresinthemiddleofthebrain,s
17、uchasthehippocampus,whichistraditionallyassociatedwithmemoryloss.Theprefrontalcortexisinvolvedinarangeofcomplexcognitiveprocesses,suchasplanning,decisionmaking,andselectiveretrievalofmemory.Extensiveresearchshowsthispartofthebrainworksincombinationwiththehippocampustoretrievespecificmemories.Ifthehi
18、ppocampusisthesearchengine,theprefrontalcortexisthefilterdeterminingwhichmemoryisthemostrelevant.Thissuggeststhatstoringinformationaloneisnotenoughforagoodmemory.Thebrainalsoneedstobeabletoaccesstherelevantinformationwithoutbeingdistractedbysimilarcompetingpiecesofinformation.Indailylife,forgettinga

28、ell-to-dointosomethingaffordableforaverageAmericans.Intheearly1900s,healsobuiltanentiretown,Hershey,Pennsylvania,aroundhischocolatefactory.In1917,HarryBurnettReesemovedtoHershey,wherehewasadairymanforthechocolatecompanyandlaterworkedatitsfactory.InspiredbyMiltonHersheyssuccess,Reese,whoeventuallyhad
