学生应该能用辞典和其他工具书独立解决语言和文化、背景知识方面的难点，增加文化知识，尤其是英语语言国家的背景知识和文化知识，更好地使语言和文化结合起来。通过一学年（约144学时）的高级英语课程教学，学生应达到高等学校外语专业教学指导委员会修订的《高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲》所规定的要求：认知词汇达10，000以上，能正确而熟练地使用其中5，000多个及其最常用的搭配；能熟练掌握句子之间和段落之间的各种衔接手段，连贯地表达思想；能读懂一般英美报刊杂志上的文章、英语国家出版的有一定难度的历史传记和文学作品；能分析文章的思想观点、语篇结构、语言特点和修辞手法等。通过阅读和分析内容广泛的材料，包括涉及政治﹑经济﹑社会﹑语言﹑文学﹑教育﹑哲学等方面的名家作品，扩大学生的知识面，加深对社会和人生的理解，培养对文章的分析和理解能力﹑逻辑思维能力以及独立思考能力，巩固和提高语言综合运用能力。要求学生掌握课文的中心思想，了解篇章结构﹑段落大意，熟悉各种常见的修辞手段以及课文的重点、难点。每课都配有大量的相关练习，包括阅读理解、词汇研究、文体分析、中英互译和写作练习等，使学生的英语水平在质量上有较大的提高。英语专业高年级阶段的主要教学任务是让学生继续打好语言基本功，学习英语专业知识和相关专业知识，进一步扩大知识面，增强对文化差异的敏感性，提高综合运用英语进行交际的能力。
