Self-Interestvs.AltruismMcMurphy’scharacterisworthconsideringincomparingthedrivesforaltruismandself-interest.WhenMcMurphyentersthehospital,hehasthegoalofcausingchaosinordertodisruptNurseRatched'scarefullydesignedschemes,whichquashtheinmates'spirits.Atfirstitseemsthathedoessoprimarilyforamusement,orinordertoestablishhimselfasTopDogandensurethathehasthepowerintheward.Healsoconsistentlyfleecestheotherinmatesingamblinggames.Overtime,however,wesuspectthatmoney,power,andamusementarenot—orarenolonger—hisprimarymotivationfortakingonRatched.Hedevelopsasinceredesiretoresuscitatethesefallen,empty,drainedsouls.OnceMcMurphyrealizesthathemightnevergetout,beinginvoluntarilycommittedsubjecttoRatched'swill,heforawhilefollowshisself-interest.Butthisistemporary,forheultimatelysacrificeshimselfinordertoallowtheinmatestoseetheirchanceforescapefromthewardinbothbodyandsoul.

Mindvs.MatterThisfilmelucidatessomewaysthatpeopleimprisonthemselvespsychosomatically,usingthemindtotrapthebody.InthecaseofChiefBromden,forinstance,theIndianhasconvincedothers—maybeevenhimself—thatheisdeafanddumb.Thischosenhandicapdictatestheconditionsofeventhemostmundanemomentsofhislife.Meanwhile,fortherestoftheinmates,ingrouptherapysessionsNurseRatchedusesthepowerofsuggestiontoexposetheirdeepestinsecurities.Weseeoverandoverthatbeliefinaparticularailmentseemstoinduceit.GroupMentalityvs.Individualism
