itistrulyheartbreakingtowitnessthelossthatcontinuestotakeplaceinthesepartsoftheworld.morethaneverweneedtostriveforanendtotheviolence.weneedtounitebehindpeace,tolerance,compassion,generositytowardsoneandother–thevaluesthatareattheheartofislamandtheheartofeid.todayiwanttoreaffirmmycommitmenttothosevalues,myparty’scommitmenttothosevalues,andiwanttowishyouallalovingandpeacefuleid.

butbeforeisaythatiwanttosaysomethingaboutwhatadifficulteidiknowithasbeenbecauseoftheterribleeventsiniraqandsyriaandtheappallingbrutalityofisil.butinthemidstofthisbrutalityandtheawfulbeheadingofbritishhardworkinggood,compassionatemenlikealanhenninganddavidhaines,inthemidstofallthat,somethinghasemergedinourcountrywhichmakesmeincrediblyproud.andthathasbeentheresponseofbritishmuslimswhohavestoodupandstoodtogetherandsaid:“theseappallingeventsarenotbeingdoneinmyname.”andifeltsoproudofbritishmuslimsineverythingthatyouhavesaidandeverythingthatyouhavedone.andletussayagaintonightthatthesepeopleiniraqandsyriadoingtheseappallingthings,theyhavenothingtodowiththegreatreligionofislam,areligionofpeace,areligionthatinspiresdailyactsofkindnessandgenerosity.

andthatleadsmetowhatiwantedtosayabouteid.becausei’mnotascholarofanyreligionbutwhatiloveabouteidisitdemonstrateshowclosetogetherourreligionsare.becauseofcoursewe’rethinkingofsacrifice,andwe’rethinkingofcompassion.we’rethinkingofthemomentthatabrahamshowedhisreadinesstosacrificetogodbecausehewaspreparedtogiveuphisson.butgodsaid,“no,youmusttakealambinstead.”

thisisthesameinmybibleasitisinyourquran.butwhatilovewithwhatyouhavedonewiththefestivalofeidisthatyou’vetakenitonestagefurtherandsaidthatthatlambshouldbesacrificedin3ways:forfamily,forfriendsandneighbours,andthenathirdforthosethatareneediestinoursocietyandinourcountry.andithinkthatlessonofsacrificeandcompassionthatiunderstandattheheartofeidissoimportantandsomethingthatshouldbringallourreligionsandourcommunitiestogether.

thesecondthingiwantedtosayisjustaboutthecontributionthatbritishmuslimsmakeinourcountry.i’vespokenabouttheextraordinaryoutpouringthere’sbeenabouttheseappallingeventsinsyriaandiraq,butweshouldn’tbesurprisedaboutthatbecausebritishmuslimcommunitiesareimmenselyproudofbeingbritishandtheygiveanenormousamounttoourcountry.britishmuslimsareactuallythemostgenerous,charitablegiversthatthereareofanycommunityinbritain,andthat’ssomethingtobeimmenselyproudofaswellasallthecontributionstothearts,toliterature,tomusic,tosport.

beforemyconferencespeechimetanabsolutelysensationalbritishmuslimwomanwhonotonlyran2superbrestaurantsbutwasalsoateacher,wasalsoaconservativecouncillorandwasalsothemotherof5brilliantchildren,allofwhomimet.andthatmademethinkaboutthehardworkingpeopleinbritishmuslimcommunitieswhoareabsolutelystandingupforthevaluesthatmakethiscountrygreat:valuesofenterprise,valuesoffamily,valuesofcommunity,valuesofhardwork.andthatiswhatwe’recelebratingtonight.

thirdandfinalthingisjusttosayawordaboutwhatwe’redoingasacountrytohelpmuslimswhoaresufferingaroundtheworld.andithinkperhapswedon’tsayenoughaboutthis,andithinkperhapsweneedtosaymoreinallourcommunitiestodemonstratetopeoplewhocarepassionatelyaboutthesufferingpeoplegothroughaboutwhatagenerousandcompassionatenationthisis.weseetheseappallingproblemsinsyriawithsomanyrefugeesandsomanypeoplesuffering.britainisthesecondlargestbilateraldonorofanycountryintheworld.we’realwaysthefirsttostepupandstepforward,andweshouldbeproudofthat.

i’vejustbeenchairingameetingtodayabouthowwerespondtotheappallingcrisisofebolainwestafrica,wheremuslimsandchristiansaresufferingalongsideeachotherwiththisappallingaffliction.ofcourseamericahastakensomegreatstepsbutbritainagainisthesecondcountryintheworld,spending￡125milliontohelppeopleinwestafrica.we’resendingships.we’resendinghelicopters.we’resendingdoctors.we’rebuilding700bedstohelpthosepeople.ifyoulookatwhofundsthepalestinianauthority,again,britainisoneofthemostgenerousdonors,notjusttohelpwithaidbutalsotohelpwithgovernanceandwithexpertisesothatpalestinecanhavethestatehoodthatitsorichlydeserves.

soinalltheseareasweshouldcelebratewhatwedo,whatbritishmuslimsdobutwhatourwholecountrydoesforthosewhosufferaroun
