For13years,Barleandsixotherpolarbearswereforcedtoperform.Barlewasdeniednot
onlytheabilitytorun,swim,andclimbbutalsothechancetofindamateandraise
young.Whennotperforming,Barleandtheotherbearswerekeptinatruckdividedintoseven
64-square-footmetalcages.
BarlewouldlikelyneverhavebeenrescuedhaditnotbeenforKenandSherriGigliotti.In
1996,theCanadiancoupletookatriptoCozumel,Mexico,wheretheyvisitedtheSuarez
BrothersCircus.Theywereshockedbythepolarbears'conditions,sotheybroughthomea
circusprogramandshareditwiththeWinnipegFreePress.
SoonaftertheFreePressstoryappeared,DebbieLeahy,thendirectorofCaptiveAnimal
Rescue,beganinvestigatingtheSuarezBrothersCircus.Shewatchedthebearsperformseveral
times,andonceshereceivedabehind-thescenestour.Duringeachvisit,thebearswere
dirty.Flieswereeverywhere.
Leahydevotedherselftothebears*rescue.Later,theManitobagovernmentpassedthe
PolarBearProtectionAct,whichstatedthatonlyorphanedbabybearsundertwoyearsofage
wereeligible(有资格的)forzooplacementandzoosmustsatisfystrictstandards.
Duetomountingpressurefrominterestgroups,theSuarezBrothersCircuschoseto
abandonitssevenpolarbearsinPuertoRico.
