Introduction:

Beginbyaskingthechildreniftheyknowwhatasmileisandwhatitmeans.Showthempicturesofsmilingfaces,andaskthemtodescribethefeelingthesmileconveys.Explaintothechildrenthatsmilingisimportantincommunicationbecauseitexpresseskindness,friendliness,andhappiness.Tellthemthattoday,theywilllearnhowtousesmilingeffectivelytomakeothersfeelhappy.

Procedure:

1.ModelSmiling:Showthechildrenhowtosmilebymodellingitforthem.Useamirrortodemonstratethedifferenttypesofsmiles,suchasahappysmile,apolitesmile,orashysmile.Encouragethechildrentotryoutdifferenttypesofsmilesontheirown.

2.Storytime:Readastorybookthatfeaturescharactersexpressingthemselvesthroughsmiling,suchas"TheRainbowFish"byMarcusPfister,"TheGivingTree"byShelSilverstein,or"Asmileforall"byEricSeltzer.Askthechildrentoidentifythecharacters’emotionsbasedontheirfacialexpressions.

3.SmilingGame:Playagamewherethechildrenhavetopassasmilearoundthecircle.Onechildbeginsbysmilingandsaying,"I'mhappy."Thechildnexttothemrepeatsthephraseandpassesthesmileontothenextperson,andsoon.Encouragethechildrentousedifferenttypesofsmilesastheypassthesmilealong.
