Therearehugedifferencesbetweentheparentingstylesbetweentheupperandworkingclassfamilies.Poorfamiliesrespondlessquicklytolearningproblemsandarelessaggressivewiththeschoolbureaucracy.Theyarelesslikelytoverballyinteractwiththeirkids.Theyarelessinvolvedinhomeworkactivities.Middleandupperclassparentsaremorelikelytorewardindependentthinking.Allthosefactorswilldefinitelyimpactontheirkids’futures.

ButIhopethatBrooksandhispetacademicaren’tinsinuatingthatparentingstylesaloneimpactonachild’seconomicsuccess.Waytoomanyotherfactorsthere.Poorfamiliesarealsolikelytoliveintownswithpoorerschools.Peerswillbemoretroubled.Thepoorfamilieswillbecopingwithavarietyofproblemsthatmakeithardtobegoodparents–financialstress,drugandalcoholproblems,lackofhealthcare,depression.Andreallysmartkidscaninmanyinstancesovercomeallthatandsucceed,thougheventhesmartonesstillfaceobstacles.Iwouldlovetoknowiftheresearcherscontrolledforallthat.

Theseparentingdifferencesalsodon’tnegateourobligationtohelpingthesegroupsreachtheirpotential.
