ThesecondpointtomakeclearisthatevenwithsosmallawordlistandsosimpleastructureitispossibletosayinBasicEnglishanythingneededforthegeneralpurposesofeverydayexistence—inbusiness,trade,industry,science,medicalwork—inalltheartsofliving,inalltheexchangesofknowledge,desires,beliefs,opinions,andnews,whicharethechiefworkofalanguage.Itistruethatifwegooutsidethefieldofgeneralinterestsandintospecialbranchesofthesciences,theartsorthetrades,weshallhavetohaveotherwords,notlistedamongthe850.Butthesensesoftheseotherwordsmaybemadeclearinfootnoteswiththe850,byteachinggiventhroughBasicEnglish,ortheymaybeseenintheGeneralBasicEnglishDictionary,which,usingonlythebasicwords,givesthesensesoftwentythousandwords.InthiswayBasicEnglishbecomesaframeworkinwhichwordsneededforspecialpurposestaketheirplace,andfromandthroughwhichtheytaketheirsenses.Aknowledgeofthe850andoftherulesbywhichtheyareputtogetherisenough,however,fortalkandwritingonalleverydaygenerallevels.Itwouldbeclearbutnotverybrightreading.Thesameword—becausethereareonly850ofthem—wouldkeepcomingbackagainandagain.AreaderwhohastherestoftheEnglishLanguagemaygetalittletiredofBasicWritingafteratime.
ThethirdmostimportantpointaboutBasicEnglishisthatitisnotmerelyalistofwords,governedbyaminimumapparatusofessentialEnglishGrammar,butahighlyorganizedsystemdesignedthroughouttobeaseasyaspossibleforalearnerwhoistotallyignorantofEnglishorofanyrelatedlanguage.Itisalanguageforalltheworld,notjustforthosewhohappentohavesomerelatedlanguageastheirmothertongue.
