Today,wearebeginningtothinkdifferently.Inthelastfewyears,researchhasthrowndoubtontheviewthatinnateintelligencecaneverbemeasuredandontheverynatureofintelligenceitself.Perhapsmostimportant,thereisconsiderableevidencenowwhichshowsthegreatinfluenceoftheenvironmentbothonachievementandintelligence.Childrenwithpoorhomebackgroundsnotonlydolesswellintheirschoolworkandinintelligencetests—afactwhichcouldbeexplainedongeneticgrounds—buttheirperformancetendstodeteriorategraduallycomparedwiththatoftheirmorefortunateclassmates.Evidencelikethislendssupporttotheviewthatwehavetodistinguishbetweengeneticintelligenceandobservedintelligence.Anydeficiencyintheappropriategeneswillobviouslyrestrictdevelopment,nomatterhowstimulatingtheenvironment.Butwecannotobserveormeasureinnateintelligence;whereaswecanobserveandmeasuretheeffectsoftheinteractionofwhateverisinheritedwithwhateverstimulationhasbeenreceivedfromtheenvironment.Changesmayoccurinourobservationsormeasurements,iftheenvironmentischanged.Inotherwords,theIntelligenceQuotientisnotconstant.

Twomajorfindingshaveemergedfromthesestudies.Firstly,thatthegreaterpartofthedevelopmentofobservedintelligenceoccursintheearliestyearsoflife.50percentofmeasurableintelligenceatage17isalreadypredictablebytheageoffour.Inotherwords,deprivationinthefirstfourorfiveyearsoflifecanhavegreaterconsequencesthananyofthefollowingtwelveorsoyears.
