Deepintothenight,outsideWashington,thebuspulledintoMacdonald's,andeverybodygotoffexceptDavid.Hesatrootedinhisseat,andtheyoungpeoplebegantowonderabouthim,tryingtoimaginehislife:perhapshewasaseacaptain,a

runaway

fromhiswife,anoldsoldiergoinghome.Whentheywentbacktothebus,oneofthegirlssatbesidehimandintroducedherself.

"We'regoingtoFlorida,"shesaidbrightly."Ihearit'sreallybeautiful."

"Itis,"hesaidquietly,asifrememberingsomethinghehadtriedtoforget.

"Wantsomewine?"shesaid.Hesmiledandtookaswigfromthebottle.Hethankedherandretreatedagainintohissilence.Afterawhile,shewentbacktotheothers,andDavidnoddedinsleep.

Inthemorning,theyawokeoutsideanotherMacdonald's,andthistimeDavidwentin.Thegirlinsistedthathejointhem.Heseemedveryshy,andorderedblackcoffeeandsmoked

nervously

astheyoungpeople

chatteredaboutsleepingonbeaches.Whentheyreturnedtothebus,thegirlsatwithDavidagain,andafterawhile,slowlyandpainfully,hebegantotellhisstory.HehadbeeninprisoninNewYorkforthepastfouryears,andnowhewasgoinghome."Areyoumarried?"

"Idon'tknow."

"Youdon'tknow?"shesaid.

"Well,whenIwasinprisonIwrotetomywife,"hesaid."ItoldherthatIwasgoingtobeawayalongtime,andthatifshecouldn'tstandit,ifthekidskeptaskingquestions,ifithurthertoomuch,well,shecouldjustforgetme.I'dunderstand.Getanewguy,Isaid--she'sawonderfulwoman,reallysomething--andforgetaboutme.Itoldhershedidn'thavetowriteme.Andshedidn't.Notforthreeandahalfyears."

"Andyou'regoinghomenow,notknowing?"

"Yeah,"hesaidshyly."Well,lastweek,whenIwassuretheparole(假释)wascomingthrough,Iwroteagain.WeusedtoliveinBrunswick,justBeforeJacksonville,andthere'sabigoaktreejustasyoucomeintotown,Itoldherthatifshedidn'thaveanewguyandifshe'dtakemeback,sheshouldputayellowribbononthetree,andI'dgetoffandcomehome.Ifshedidn'twantme,forgetit--noribbon,andI'dgoonthrough."

"Wow,"thegirlexclaimed."Wow."

Shetoldtheothers,andsoonallofthemwereinit,lookingatthepicturesDavidshowedthemofhiswifeandthreechildren--thewomanhandsomeinaplainway,thechildrenstillyounginthemuch-handled(触摸过多次的)photos.

Nowtheywere20milesfromBrunswick,andtheyoungpeopletookoverwindowseatsontherightside,waitingfortheapproachofthegreatoaktree.……(tobecontinued)……Davidstoppedlooking,

ThenBrunswickwas10miles,andthenfive.Then,suddenly,alloftheyoungpeoplewereupoutoftheirseats,screamingandshoutingandcrying,doingsmalldancesofjoy.AllexceptDavid.
