pressionvalvemakesstartingeasier,particularlymanualstarting.Thevalveisoperatedbyatwistgrip.Inthe“O”positionthevalveisclosed,whileinthe“1”sectoritisopen,buttheautomaticcontroldeviceisnotengaged.Turningthegripfurther–alwaysclock-wise–willengagetheautomaticcontrol.Whentheengineiscranked,thevalvewillautomaticallyreturnnotchbynotchtothe“0”position.Thistakesfourfullturnsofthecrankhandleandthespeedgainedtherebyshouldmaketheenginefireatthefirstfollowingcompressionstroke.Useofthe y10hourswhenumRPMshouldnot3000min-1willprolongengineandgearboxlife.Afterthese10hours,theengineshouldbecheckedbyaBMWMarineDealerinaccordancewiththeinstructionsintheservicesection.Alwayschecktheengineoillevel,priortothefirststartingoftheAirTheBMWD7fuelsystemincorporatesafullyautomaticair-bleedPriortostartingupafteralongrestperiodorwhenthefuelsystemhasbeenworkedon,operatetheprimerpumpsome30–50strokes,whichwillsavethebatteryandstarter.(Forlocationofprimerpumpseediagramsonpages13&15)StartingAColdCheckthatthegear-shiftisinSetthethrottleatthe“full”Turnthestarterswitchkeytothe“II”positionanscheckthatthealternatorchargingcontrollampcomesonTurnthekeytothe“S”positionwhichwillengagethestartermotor.Whentheenginefiresevenly,releasethestarterswitchkeySetthethrottleatnormalImportant–seeNOTESonnextIfoutsidetemperatureisextremelylow,theprimerdeviceontopofthecylinderhead(seediagramonpage8)sgouldbefilledwithdieselorlubricatingoilandtheplugfullypresseddowntoinjecttheoilintotheintakemanifold.Sinceadieselengineisdependentonacertaincompressionpressure=heattoignitethefule,onemayhavetooperatethestarterforlongerperiodsthanisthecasewithagasolineengine.Undernocircumstancesshouldthestarterbeengagedformorethanthirtysecondsatatime.Abatterytoolowforsufficientcrankingspeedwilldoomthestartingfromthebeginningandthebatterywilldrainveryrapidly.Insuchacase,trythe LUBRICATIONTheBMWD7isequipedwithasimpleandrelaiblesshlubricationOillevelcheck–isdonedailywithaidoftheEngineoilchange–normallyevery50hours.Abrandnewengine,however,willrequireit’sfirstoilchangeaftertenorfifteenhoursrunning.Pumpouttheoiloilviathedipstickopeningwhiletheengineiswarm.Refillviathecrankcasefillerplug.Gearboxoilchange–iscarriedoutat150hourintervalsandwhenthegearboxisstillwarm.Removethedrainplug–1–andthefillingopeningplug–2-.Allowtheoilenoughtimetodraincompley.Checkthatthedrainplugsealisundamagedpriortore-installation.Topupthegearboxslowlywith0.4litres(0.1USgal)ATFDexronoil.Leavethefillingopeningopenforsomeminutesuntilanypossibleairlockshaveescaped.Checktheplugsealandinstalltheplug.COOLINGTheenginehasaraw-waterdirectcoolingsystemfedbyanimpellertypepumplocatedonthefrontoftheengineanddrivenbythecrankshaft.Thewateriscirculatedthroughthecylinderblockandcylinderheadjacketsandfinallydiscardedviaathermostatcontrolledoutletintotheexhaustmanifold.Pumpimpellerchange–ispossiblewhenthepumphousingfrontcoverisremoved.Prytheimpelleroffitsshaftusingtwoscredrivers.Lubricatetheshaftandtheimpellervaneswithafewdropsofoilpriortoinstallation.Bendthevanesoppositetothedirectionofrotationinordertoavoiddistortion.RenewthepumphousinggasketandinstalltheNOTE–theimpellershouldberemovedpriortolay-up–seeinstructionsonpageTheenginetempraturewarninglightsensor–1–andself-sacrificinganodes–2–aresituatednexttothethermostathousing–3–.Theanodesresistinternalcorrosioninthecoolingsystem.Theself-sacrificinganodes–arecheckedregularlyandre
