Communicationsserviceprovidersworldwidearecontinuingtoinvestin5G,drivenbytheprospectofsuperiorconnectivityandemergingopportunities.Thiscomesdespitegeopoliticalunrestandamacroeconomicslowdowninsomemarkets.

Newmajor5Gmarketsareemerging.Indiaisexperiencingmassivenetworkdeployments,makingitthefastestgrowing5Gmarketglobally.5GisacriticalcomponentinIndia’sjourneytorealizeits“DigitalIndia”vision.Meanwhile,inNorthAmericatheadditionofmid-bandspectrumnowenablessuperiormulti-band5Gexperiencesformanyusers.

Withover1billion5Gsubscriptionsworldwide,serviceprovidersinleading5Gmarketshavebeenexperiencingpositiverevenuegrowthoverthepast2years.However,the5Grolloutisstillinprogress,andthedeploymentof5Gmid-bandspectrum,whichoffershigh

capacityandgoodcoverageforsuperioruserexperiences,remainslimitedtoaround

25percentof4Gsitesglobally,withNorthAmericaaheadandEuropebehind.

Asglobalmobilenetworkdatatrafficcontinuestogrow,withaCAGRofaround25percentprojectedthrough2028,smartnetworkmodernizationbecomesimperative.

Managingthisgrowthwhileimprovingthemobileuserexperiencerequirescontinuednetworkevolution.Notably,5Gmid-bandbuild-outisprovingtobemoreenergy-efficientandcost-effectivecomparedtotheexpansionof4Gnetworks.

Inthisedition,weuncoverinsightsthathighlightkeyconsiderationsforfuturenetworkevolution,basedonanalysisofdatatrafficgrowthandpatternsacrossdifferentlocationsinmobilenetworks.

Alistofthetop205Gmarketswasidentified,basedon5Gsubscriptionpenetrationranking.Foreachserviceproviderinthesemarkets,relativerevenuedevelopmentwascalculated,usingthefirstquarterof2017asareferencepoint.Thedevelopmentwascalculatedasarollingfour-quarteraverage,tofilteroutseasonality.Finally,individualdevelopmentswereaggregatedintoanaveragedevelopmentrepresentingallserviceprovidersinthetop205Gmarkets.

Serviceproviderspromoting5Gvalueintimesofsurginginflation

Historically,serviceprovidershavefounditchallengingtoincreaseconsumerpricesformobilesubscriptionsinlinewithinflation.Withthecurrentsurgeofinflationacrossmanyareas,someserviceprovidershave

nowstartedtoadjusttheirtariffsinrelationtotheConsumerPriceIndex(CPI).Sofar,adjustmentshavebeensignificantlylowerthaninflationandthispracticeisstillfarfromcommonplace.Astheseadjustmentsonlyapplytoentirelyneworrenewedcontracts,theywouldhavehadlittleimpactonrevenuegrowthduring2022.

Incontrasttosuchreactivepriceadjustments,whichprovidenoincentiveforconsumerstopaymore,thelaunchof5Gserviceshasenabledserviceproviderstoproactivelydriveashifttohighermobiletariffs,whileaddingvalueforconsumers.

Valueofconnectivitystrengthenedbynew5Gservices

5Ghascreatednewvalueforconsumerandenterprisecustomers,withserviceofferingsoflargerdatabuckets,higher

speeds,andimproveduserexperiences.Forserviceproviders,theadditionalvalueprovidedtoconsumersandenterprisestranslatesintoopportunitiesforupsellandrevenueincrease.TherevenuetrendinFigure2indicatesthisvaluecapturehasalreadybegun.As5Gnetworksandecosystemsmature,withmoreservicesandapplicationsbeingdevelopedandoffered,evenmore

Mobilefinancialservicesareexpectedtocontinuetogainmomentum,withanincreaseinmobileconnectivityandexpansionofpropositionsfrombasictransfers.Merchantpayments,remittances,insuranceandotherserviceswillalsobefactorstoincreasetheusageofmobilefinancialservices.

GCCcountriesarefrontrunnersinglobal5Gnetworkdeploymentsandserviceofferings,withstrongregulatorypoliciesandframeworksaswellaspublicsectorinitiativesdrivingaccelerationofgrowthofthe5Gmarket.5Gsubscriptionsareprojectedtogrowfrom13to70millionbetween2022and2028,accountingfor86percentofthetotalsubscriptionsattheendoftheperiod.

Accountingfor73percentoftotalsubscriptionscurrently,4Gisexpectedtodeclineby29percentannuallyassubscribersincreasinglymoveto5G,andareofferedvariousservicessuchasenhancedmobilebroadband(eMBB)andFixedWirelessAccess(FWA).Additionally,serviceproviderswillcontinuetoexploreenterpriseopportunities,asmajordigitaltransformationprojectstakeplaceacrossvariousindustries.

CentralandEasternEurope

TechnologyadoptionandsubscriptionuptakearetypicallyslowerinthisregionthaninWesternEurope.Thisisdueinparttoslowerspectrumallocationprocesses,aswellasconsumersbeingreluctanttoupgradetomoreexpensivesubscriptions.4Gisthedominanttechnology,accountingfor73percentofallsubscriptionsattheendof2022.Mobilesubscriptiongrowthhasflattenedandisexpectedtobevirtuallyzerointhecomingyears.However,the

migrationfrom2G/3Gto4Gcontinuestolookstrongupto2024.From2025,5Gisexpectedtobetheonlygrowingsubscriptiontype.

Duringtheforecastperiod,therewillcontinuetobeasignificantdeclinein3Gsubscriptions,from22percentofmobilesubscriptionstojust1percent.

SouthEastAsiaandOceania

Serviceprovidersarecontinuingtoexpandtheir5Gpopulationcoverage.Bytheendof2022,5Gwasavailabletoaround

50percentofthepopulationinMalaysiaand66percentinthePhilippines.Atthesametime,morethan80percentofthepopulationinAustraliaandThailandhadaccesstothetechnology,andSingaporeachievedmorethan95percentcoveragebymid-2022.2LeadingserviceprovidersinIndonesiathatlaunchedcommercial5Gservicesusingtheirexistingspectrumholdingsareawaitingthereleaseofnew5Gspectrumbandstoexpandtheirnetworks.Meanwhile,serviceprovidersinVietnamaremakinggoodprogresswithtrialsastheyawaitspectrumavailability.5Gsubscriptionsareforecasttoreacharound430millionbytheendoftheforecastperiod.

Thisisanadjustmenttothepreviousforecastof620million,impactedbydelayedspectrumauctionsinseveralcountriesandslower-than-expectedgrowth.Serviceproviderscontinuetofocusoncreatinginnovativeproductsandservicesforbothconsumersandbusinesses.Anexampleofthisisutilizingthecapabilitiesof5Gstandalone(SA)tobuildnetworkslicingusecases.Thereissignificantmomentumaround5GFWA.WhileserviceprovidersinAustraliaandthePhilippinescontinuetoexpandtheircommercial5GFWAofferings,a5GFWAtrialwithsub-6spectrumandmmWaveisbeingcarriedoutinIndonesia.Serviceprovidersarealsoforgingpartnershipsandactivelyexpandingthe5Gecosystem.

LatinAmerica

4Giscurrentlythedominantradioaccesstechnologyintheregion,accountingfor74percentofallsubscriptionsattheendof2022.4Gsubscriptiongrowthisstrong,witharound60millionaddedduring2022.However,3Gsubscriptionsaredecliningasusersmigrateto4Gand5G.Manyserviceproviderswillsunset3Gnetworksinthenexttwoyearstoenablethereuseofradiospectrumfor4Gdeployments.

Theforecastfor5Gsubscriptionshasbeenpushedforwardoneyear,basedonslowuptakeandexpectedcontinueddifficultmacroeconomicconditionsintheregion.Therewerearound7million5Gsubscriptionsattheendof2022.Amoresubstantialuptakeisexpectedfrom2024onwards.

Bytheendof2028,5Gwillaccountfor42percentofallmobilesubscriptions.

India,NepalandBhutan

Followingthelaunchof5GservicesinIndiainearlyOctober2022,Indiaisseeingaggressive5Gnetworkdeploymentsbyserviceproviders.Fast-growingnetworkavailabilityacrosscities,attractive5Gpricingandthegrowingavailabilityof5Gsmartphoneshasseen5Gsubscriptionsreacharound10millionbytheendof2022.Pan-Indianavailabilityof5Gnetworksbytheendof2023/early2024willfurtherfuelgrowth.5Gsubscriptionsareexpectedtoreach700millionandareestimatedtoaccountfor57percentofmobilesubscriptionsintheregionbytheendof2028.eMBBandFWAarealreadyemergingastheinitialusecasesfor5G.

Meanwhile,4Gcontinuestobethedominantsubscriptiontypedrivingconnectivityandfuelingdatagrowthintheregion.4Gsubscriptionsareforecasttodeclinefrom820millionin2022to500millionby2028.Totalmobilesubscriptionsintheregionareestimatedtogrowto1.2billionin2028.

NorthEastAsia

Serviceprovidershavebeeninvestingin5Gtoimprovecoverageandcapacity,withafocusonindoorcoverage.Strong5Gsubscriptiongrowthcontinuedin2022,addingaround240millionsubscriptions.5Gistheonlygrowingsubscriptiontypeandisexpectedtoreach1.1billionintheregionattheendof2024.Therapidgrowthof5Gsubscriptions,supportedbytheavailabilityofmore5Gdevicemodels,haspositivelyimpactedserviceproviders’financialperformance.Majorserviceprovidersinleading5Gmarkets,suchasmainlandChina,TaiwanandSouthKorea,havereportedapositiveimpactof5GsubscribersonservicerevenuesandARPU.

Acloserlook

TheNorthEastAsiaregionconsistsoffivedistinct,

vibrantmarketsatthecenterofmoderndigitalinnovation,

with5Gbeingoneofthekeyenablingtechnologies.

ServiceprovidersintheNorthEastAsiaregionmadesignificantinvestmentsinearly5Gdeployments.SouthKoreawasthefirstcountrytolaunchcommercial5Gnetworks,andthesewereavailableinallfivemarketsby2020.Currently,5Gpopulationcoverageandsubscriptionuptakeintheregionisaheadofmostoftherestoftheworld.
