Aladdinwasthesonofapoortailor.Hisfathertriedtoteachhimthetrade,buttheboywassolazy,herefusedtodoanywork.BecauseAladdinneverliftedafinger,hisfatherworkedhimselftoexhaustionuntilhedied.Buteventhen,Aladdinwouldnotchangehislazywaysandyedwiththenaughtyboysinthestreetwhilehismotherspuncotton.
WhenAladdinwasfifteen,amagicianarrivedinthekingdom.Themagicianwanderedthroughthestreets,lookingforsomefoolishboytotrick.WhenhesawAladdin,hepouncedonhimimmedia y.

“Youthere,yourfacelooksfamiliar,”hecalled.“ lmewhoyourfatheris.”
“MyfatherisMustapha,thetailor.Buthe’sbeendeadfortwoyears,”Aladdinreplied.
“Oh,dearme,itcan’tbetrue!I’vecomeallthiswaytoseemybrother,Mustapha,only
tofindoutheisdead!”criedthemagician.HehuggedAladdincloseandpretendedtoweep.“Andyou,fineboy,mustbemy
nephew.You’vesurelytakenoveryourpoorfather’stailorshop.”
“Bah!”saidAladdin.“Ican’tstandworking!Iprefertoyinthestreetswithmyfriends.”
“What?That’snogoodforayoungboy.Letmemakeyouanoffer.Ifyoucomewithmetomorrow,I’llbuyashopandmakeyouashopkeeper.Thatway,youcanearnmoneywithout nglabor.”
Aladdinlikedthesoundofthatandagreedtofollowhisfalseunclethenextday.

Inthemorning,themagicianledAladdinoutofthecity,acrossthecountryside,andintothemountains.Eventuallytheycame
toaledgeontheedgeofacliff.
“Uncle,whereismyshop?Whyareweouthere?”Aladdinasked.
“Gathersomefirewood,boy,andyou’llbethankfulyou’rehere.”SoAladdingatheredwoodandbuiltasmallfire.Themagiciansprinkledincenseovertheflames,waved
hishands,andmurmuredmysteriouswords.BeforeAladdin’seyes,theearthopenedup,revealingastonewithabrassringattached.“Takeholdoftheringandliftthestone!”orderedthemagician.
Aladdinwasquiteafraid,forhewassurethiswasnoordinaryuncle.Heliftedthestoneandsawapassagewayleadingdownstonestairsintothedarkness.
“Now,Nephew,youmustdoexactlyasIsay.Godownthestairsandintoagoldenhall,butdonottouchthewalls!Even
brushingyoursleeveagainstthegoldwillkillyouinstantly.At ofthehall,youwillcometoafruitorchardwithapathleading
toasmalllampsittingonastone.Blowouttheflame,emptytheoil,andbringthelamptome.I’llgiveyoumyring,whichwillkeepyoufromharmaslongasyouobeyme.”

Aladdintooktheringandwentdownthestairs,carefulnottotouchthegoldenwallsofthebeautifulhall.At ofthehall,heenteredabrightorchardwithfruittreesbearingthemostcolorful,deliciousfruitAladdinhadeverseen.
Hecouldnotresistpluckingabrightredapple.Assoonashetookitfromthetree,theapplechangedintoasolidruby!Atthenexttree,hepluckedabunchofgoldengrapes,whichchangedtoaclusterofpearls.Lemonsturnedtodiamonds,andlimestoemeralds.
Aladdingatheredasmuchfruitashecouldbeforefollowingthepathtothelamp.Hepiledthelampontopofthetreasureinhisarmsandreturnedtothestairswherehisunclewaited.
“Uncle,myloadisheavy;helpmeup,”hesaid.
“Firstgivemethelamp!”demandedthemagician.
“Itoldyou,Uncle,myhandsarefull.Icannotgiveyouanythinguntilyouhelpme.”

“Foolishboy!Givemethelamporstaydownthereforever!”Themagicianknewthelamp’smagicwouldnotworkifhetookitfromsomeoneby .
“ButUncle!”edAladdin.Beforehecouldfinish,themagicianmutteredmore
magicwords,andSLAM!thestoneflewshut,lockingAladdininsidethecavern.
Aladdincalledandcalled,buthisunclewouldnotanswer.Finallyhedecidedtopray,butwhenheputhishandstogether,heaccidentallyrubbedthemagician’sring.Instantly,afrightfulgeniestoodbeforehim.“Whatwouldyouhave?Iamtheslaveofwhoeverwearsthering.”
Aladdinwasterrified,butheimmedia yreplied,“Bringmehome!”Innotime,hestoodathisfrontdoor,hisworriedmotherweewithjoytoseehim.Aladdinwasstarving,andhebeggedhismothertoselloneofthetreasures—thedustylamp,perhaps—forfood.

Hismotherbegantopolishthelampwithanoldrag,andanotherenormousgenieappeared.“Whatwouldyouhave?Iamtheslaveofwhoeverownsthelamp.”
Hismotherwasterrified,butAladdinknewwhattodo.“Bringusasatisfyingfeast!”heshouted.Inaninstant,thegeniebroughtdozensofsolidsilvertraysoverflowing
withfood.Butteryrolls,delectablepastries,and ingroastsfilledtheirtable.WhenAladdinandhismotherfinished,enoughfoodstillremainedformanydays.Theywouldneverbehungryagain.Whenthefoodranout,theysoldapieceofbeautifulsilverwareoroneofthetraysformore.

TheywouldhavelivedlikethisforeverifAladdinhadnotbeenonthestreetwhenheheardthetowncriershouting,“Backtoyourhouses,all!Shutteryourwindows!PrincessBuddirwillgotothebath!”NoonewasallowedtoseetheSultan’sdaughterwithoutherveil.Aladdinhidhimselfbehindthewallofthebathhouse,eagertoseetheprincess’sface.Whenshecamebywithherservants,Aladdinwassostruckbyherbeauty,hevowedhewouldmarryher.
“Haveyoulostyoursenses?”criedhismotherwhenhetoldherhisns.

“Onlymyheart,”Aladdinreplied.“Takethissilvertrayfromourmealandloaditwithfruitfromthecavern.WrapitcarefullyinragsandtakeittotheSultantoaskforhisdaughter’shandinmarriage.”
Thoughshegrumbledthatatailor’swifewouldneverbeallowedtoseetheSultan,Aladdin’smotherpiledthetraywithgleamingjewelsandwrappeditinrags.
TheSultan’sguardswouldhavethrownherout,buttheSultanwascuriousastowhatwashiddeninsidethebundle.HeorderedAladdin’smotherintohishall.
Aladdin’smotherbowedlow,holdinguptheragbundle,whichwasscarcelydistinguishablefromherclothing.“Sultan,mysonbegsforyourdaughter’shandinmarriage.”
TheSultanburstoutlaughing.“Evenif
Iallowedit,mydaughterwouldbeinsultedtolivewithsomeoneaspoorasyourson.ButbeforeItossyouout,unwrapyourbundleandshowmewhatyouhavebrought.”
Aladdin’smotherunwrappedthepackage,andtheenormousjewelsglitteredinthesunlithall.TheSultan’sjawfellopenasheadmiredagoldpear,forhehadneverseensuchtreasures.

becarriedbytwoslaves,andeachslavemustbedressedintherichestclothing.”
Aladdin’smotherwentbacktohersonandtoldhimwhattheSultanhadsaid.
Aladdinlaughed,forthepowerofthelampcouldgethimanything.Instantly,thegenieproducedatrainofeightyslavescarryingtraysofgoldandjewels.AcrowdgatheredtowatchthemmarchtotheSultan’spalacebehindAladdin’sraggedmother.
“Again,youhaveimpressedme,”theSultansaid.“ButImustknowthathewillkeepmydaughterhappy. lyoursontohaveasplendidpalacereadyforherbytheendoftheweek.”
Inaflash,AladdinorderedthegenietobuildamagnificentpalaceinthegardenacrossfromtheSultan’swindow.ThegenieevenranasoftredcarpetfromthedoorofAladdin’spalacetothedooroftheSultan’s.Aladdinhimself,dressedinthefinestsilk,rodetotheSultan’sdooronahorsemorebeautifulthananyintheSultan’sstables.
“ItwouldbeunfairtomydaughterifIdidnotallowhertomarrysuchaworthyman,”saidtheSultan.

AndsoitwasthatAladdinandtheprincessweremarried.Allthekingdomcametotheweddingprocession.Musiciansled
thePrincessBuddirdownthecarpettowardAladdin’spalace,andfourhundredtorcheslitthestreetasbrightasday.InsideAladdin’spalace,theyateasumptuousfeastonsolidsilvertes.Itwasthemostjoyfuloccasionthekingdomcouldremember,andAladdinandBuddirhadhappinessformanyyears.

Theywouldhavelivedlikethisforever,butAladdinlovedridingamongthestreetsofthecitythrowinggoldtoeveryonehemet.Thismadehimquitefamous.Soon,themagicianheardofthisboywhoseemedtohaverichesasifbymagic.HeknewAladdinhadstolenhisringandlamptogainhiswealth.
Themagiciandisguisedhimselfasapeddler,filledabasketwithshinylamps,andcametothepalacedoorwhileAladdinwasout.“Whowillexchangeoldlampsfornewones?”hecalled.Buddirpeekedoutthewindow.

“Won’tAladdinbesurprisedwhenhefindsashinynewlampinsteadofthatdullonehekeepsinhischamber?”ShetookthemagiclampfromAladdin’sroomandbroughtittothepeddler.Immedia y,themagicianrubbedthelampandsummonedthegenie.
“Whatwouldyouhave?Iamtheslaveofwhoeverownsthelamp.”
“TakethisprincessandherpalaceandservantsandsendusalltoAfrica!”themagiciancried.Withaflash,thepalacevanished.
WhentheSultanlookedouthiswindow,hegaspedinhorror.Hisdaughter’spalacehadvanishedinapuffofsmoke!HeorderedthatAladdinbebroughtbeforehim.
TheSultanraged.“Whateversorceryyouusedtoproduceyourricheshasmademydaughterdisappear!Ifyoucannotbringherbackinfivedays,I’llchopoffyourhead!”
Aladdinpleadedhisinnocence,buttheSultanwouldhearnoneofit.Sadderthan
hehadeverbeen,Aladdinwanderedthecityforthreedays.Heaskedeveryoneiftheyhadseenhisprincess.Onthe day,hedecidedtopray,andherubbedthemagicring,whichhehadalmostforgottenabout.

“Please,returnmypalaceasitwas!”“OnlytheGenieoftheLampcanundo

“Thentakemetomypalace,”Aladdinsaid.Beforehecouldblink,Aladdinstoodatthefrontdoorofhispalace,whichnowsatinalonelydesertinAfrica.HesnuckinsideandreunitedwithhisPrincessBuddir,andtheybothshedtearsofjoy.

Buddirtheninvitedthemagiciantoeatwithher.Flatteredbyhersuddenkindness,themagici lowedtheprincesstopour
hisdrink.Shesecretlyaddedthepowder,andsoonthemagicianwasnoddinginhissoup.
“Mydear,”saidBuddir,“doesn’titseemawfullydarkinhere?”
Themagician’seyelidswerehalf-closed,soitdidseemdarktohim.“Whyyes,itdoes,”hemumbled.
