whentheysitdown.Dotheyimmediatelyrushintotheroom,grabachairwithout

beinginvitedtositdownAretheynervousDotheyspendalotoftimefiddlingwith

theirhands,brushingtheirhairback,holdingtheirpen,tappingitonthetable

Obviouslyeveryoneisnervousatinterviewandyoumakeallowancesforthat,but

ifitcontinuesthroughoutthewholeinterviewthenyouhavetoaskyourselfwhat

willtheybelikeinanormaljob

SecondthingthatIlookforis:DotheylookatyouDotheymakeeyecontact

Becauseiftheywon’tlookatyouinajobwhichdependsonmakingagoodimpression,

thenprobablyinthejobtheywon’tdoverywellintermsofmakingcontactand

havinggoodrelationswithothercolleagues.Thesortofpersonnormallywewould

lookforwouldbesomeonewhowas,open,outgoing,enthusiasticandwhocouldtalk

intelligentlyaboutwhattheyhaddoneandwhattheyhopedtodo.Thatdoesn’tmean

thattheyhavetohavehadalotofexperiencebutthattheyshouldbeabletoreflect

onwhateverexperiencethey’vehad.

Theotherkindsofthingsthatwemighttalkaboutinaninterviewofcourse

arewhatthepersonexpectstogetfromanewjob,andIthinkthatitisimportant

becauseitshowstheexpectationsthatthepersonhas-whattheywantfromtheirjob.

It’sinterestingtohearwhypeoplewanttochangejobs.

oratleastpeoplewon’tgettoaninterviewwithoutthequalifications,themost

importantthinginfactisthecharacterandhowapersonpresentsthemselvesat

interview.IfinditverydifficulttodefineexactlythesortofpersonIamlooking

for,butwhenImeetsomeoneIcantellwhethertheyarethesortofpersonthat

Iwouldliketoappointorwhethertheyarenot.

AtinterviewthefirstthingthatInoticeishowthepersonsettlesdown,when

theysitdown.Dotheyimmediatelyrushintotheroom,grabachairwithoutbeing

Becauseiftheywon’tlookatyouinajobwherein,inasituationwhereajob

dependson,onthemmakingagoodimpression,thenprobablyinthejobtheywon’t

doverywellintermsofmaking,er,good,makingcontactwithothercolleagues,

making,havinggoodrelationswithothercolleagues.Thesortofpersonnormally

wewouldlookforwouldbesomeonewhowas,open,outgoing,enthusiasticandwho

couldtalkintelligentlyaboutwhattheyhaddoneandwhattheyhopedtodo.That

doesn’tmeanthattheyhavetohavehadalotofexperiencebutthattheyshould

beabletoreflectonwhateverexperiencethey’vehad.

Theotherkindsof,ofumthingsthatwemighttalkaboutinaninterviewof

coursearewhat,erwhatthepersonexpectstogetfromanewjobinanewcountry,

andthatIthinkisimportantbecauseitshowstheexpectationsthatthepersonhas

—whattheywantfromtheirjob.Umit’sinterestingtohearwhypeoplewantto

changejobs,whytheywanttogotoanewcountry.
