AccordingtoinformationrecentlyreportedintheEliottownGazette,thenumberofpeoplewhotraveltoEliottownhasincreasedsignificantlyoverthepastseveralyears.Sofarthisyearover100,000peoplehavearrivedonflightstoEliottown'sairport,comparedwithonly80,000lastyearand40,000theyearbefore.Eliottown'strainstationhasreceivedmorethan50,000passengersthisyear,comparedwithlessthan40,000lastyearand20,000theyearbefore.ClearlytourisminEliottownhasbeenincreasing,thankstothenewCentralParkandMuseumofModemArtthatopenedlastyear.Therefore,thefundingfortheparkandmuseumshouldbeincreasedsignificantly.

AlthoughblackbearsarecommonintheeasternCanadianprovinceofLabrador,grizzlybears—oftensimilarincolor,butmuchlarger—werebelievedtoexistonlyinthewesternprovinces.Despiteanineteenth-centuryexplorer'saccountofhavingstartledandnarrowlyescapedfromagrizzlybeardeepinthewoodsinLabrador,modemscientistsfindnophysicalevidencethatgrizzlybearshaveeverlivedinLabrador.ButrecentresearchintothelanguageandlegendsoftheInnu,apeoplewhohavelivedinLabradorforthousandsofyears,revealsthattheirlanguagehaswordsfortwodifferentkindsofbears,andtheirancientlegendsattributedifferentcharacteristicstothetwokindsofbears.Therefore,thereprobablyweregrizzlybearsinLabrador,andtheexplorer'saccountprobablyaccuratelyidentifiedthebear.

"Doctorshavelongsuspectedthatsecondaryinfectionsmaykeepsomepatientsfromhealingquicklyafterseveremusclestrain.Thishypothesishasnowbeenprovedbypreliminaryresultsofastudyoftwogroupsofpatients.Thefirstgroupofpatients,allbeingtreatedformuscleinjuriesbyDr.Newland,adoctorwhospecializesinsportsmedicine,tookantibioticsregularlythroughouttheirtreatment.Theirrecuperationtimewas,onaverage,40percentquickerthantypicallyexpected.Patientsinthesecondgroup,allbeingtreatedbyDr.Alton,ageneralphysician,weregivensugarpills,althoughthepatientsbelievedtheyweretakingantibiotics.Theiraveragerecuperationtimewasnotsignificantlyreduced.Therefore,allpatientswhoarediagnosedwithmusclestrainwouldbewelladvisedtotakeantibioticsaspartoftheirtreatment."

Thirteenyearsago,researchersstudiedagroupof25infantswhoshowedsignsofmilddistresswhenexposedtounfamiliarstimulisuchasanunusualodororataperecordingofanunknownvoice.Theydiscoveredthattheseinfantsweremorelikelythanotherinfantstohavebeenconceivedinearlyautumn,atimewhentheirmothers'productionofmelatonin—ahormoneknowntoaffectsomebrainfunctions—wouldnaturallyincreaseinresponsetodecreaseddaylight.Inafollow-upstudyconductedearlierthisyear,morethanhalfofthesechildren—nowteenagers—whohadshownsignsofdistressidentifiedthemselvesasshy.Clearly,increasedlevelsofmelatoninbeforebirthcauseshynessduringinfancyandthisshynesscontinuesintolaterlife.
