IamverydelightedandprivilegedtorepresentDukeKunshanUniversityfacultyandstafftospeaktoyou;young,talentedstudentsfromtheUnitedStates,Chinaandallovertheworld:Welcome!You,theownersofDukeKunshanUniversity,abrandnewmodelofhighereducation!Honestlyspeaking,thosewordshavebeeninmymindfortwoyears.KunsanandDukepeoplehavebeenwaitingforthismomentforaslongassevenyears.NowthatwearefinallyabletogreetyouandwelcomeyoutoDKU,wearefilledwithcheerande*citementandwecantwaitanylonger.

WesayDKUisabrandnewmodelofhighereducationnotjustbecauseitwasjointlycreatedbytwoleadinguniversities,DukeUniversityfromtheUnitedStatesandWuhanUniversityfromChina,butalsobecauseDKUintroducesDukeUniversitysadvancededucationidea,administrationmodel,teachingpedagogyandcurriculardesignintotheconte*tofChinesehighereducationsystem.DKUaimsatbecominganelite,research,comprehensiveandinternationalworld-classuniversity,onthebasisoflearning,digesting,absorption,andre-innovationinlinewithChineseculture,socialandeconomicdevelopmentneeds.Thisiswhatweplannedtodoandthisiswhatwearedoing.

BylearningfromDukeUniversityscommitmenttoknowledgeintheserviceofsocietyandWuhanUniversityseducationalmissionsoftruthandinnovation,wearethinkingtodefinethemissionofDKUasservingtruthandjustice,servingnationsandsocieties.LearningfromDukesmodel,wehaveestablishedaBoardofTrustees,anAcademicCouncil,aBoardofAdvisorsandaflatmanagementstructure.Withademand-orientated,problem-orientatedandfuture-orientedstrategy,DKUwillestablishanumberofinterdisciplinary,cross-fieldandcross-industrycollaborativeresearchcenterswhichofferundergraduate,masteranddoctoral,andpost-doceducationandresearchprograms,inordertoachieveannewmodelofverticallearning,andanintegrationoftalentcultivation,research,socialservice,culturalinheritanceandinnovation.WehavealreadyestablishedtheDKUGlobalHealthResearchCenter,wearecurrentlyworkingontheEnvironmentmanagementandEnergyPolicyResearchCenter,andothersbasedonthesocialandeconomicdevelopmentneedsoftheworldandChina.Wehaveintroducednotonlythreeinterdisciplinarymaster-degreeprogramsfromDukeUniversity,butalsoitsundergraduateLiberalArtseducation.Wewillcontinuetointroducemoreacademicprogramsbasedonneeds,relevantproblemsandfuturetrends.WithacademicsupportfromDukeUniversityandWuhanUniversity,throughtheeffortsoffacultyandstudents,IamconfidentthatDKUwilldemonstrateitsuniqueeducationcharacteristicsamongworlduniversitycommunities,builditsownacademicstrengthsandformitsownspirit.Asyouhaveseen,wehavemanyprofessorsandstafffromDuke,theyarethewitnesstoseethisandtheyaretheguaranteetoachieveourambitious,long-termgoals.Iwouldliketoe*pressoursincerestrespectandgratitudetothemforcrossingthePacificOceantoworkforDKUinChina!Letsgivethemapplause.

WesayDKUscampusisbrandnewnotonlybecauseitwillbeunveiledverysoon,butalsobecauseofitspioneeringdesignconcept;theharmonyofpeople,building,campusandKunshansdistinctivewater-townenvironment;itshigh-standard,automatic,intelligent，energy-saving，technologyandmanagementsystemstandsoutamongalluniversitiesinChina;itsmagnificentarchitectureanddynamicspacebeautifullyblendtheinnovativeandcreativespiritofAmericanswiththeharmoniouscultureofChinese.ItwasaveryvisionaryandfortunatedecisiontolocateourcampusinKunshan,acitywithahistoryofmorethantwothousandyearsandgreatvitalitybecauseofglobalization.Morethanfifteencenturiesago,ZuChongzhi,mathematicianandthen-MagistrateofKunshan,calculatedtotheseventhdecimal,aboutathousandyearsearlierthanEuropeans.KunshanistheoriginofKunOpera,theancestorofallChineseoperas.IamsureyouwillhavemanyopportunitiestoenjoythefascinatingKunOpera.

Inadditiontoitslong-standingtraditionsofsciencesandhumanities,Kunshansbeautifulnaturalenvironmentmakesitagreatcitytolivein.Thetranquilitysurroundingourcampusmakesitagreatplacetostudy.Today,ImustpaymyrespecttotheoneswhochosethisgreatlocationandtheoneswhodesignedandbuilttheDKUcampus.Today,However,Ialsoregrettohavetotellthatyouwillnothaveclassesandliveoncampusasplannedduetothefactthatittakestimetobeautifyoutdoorenvironmentandtopurifytheairoftheinteriordecoration.Forthesakeofyoursafetyandhealth,DKUwillfollowstrictdesignstandardstoinspectandacceptthecampus.Manyworld-famousarchitectsoncesaid:Architectureisaregrettableart.Afteryoumoveintothecampus,youmightstillfindsomeregrettablesmallissues.NowIpromisetoyouonbehalfofDKUandtheconstructionteamthatwewilldoeverythingwecantoensureyoursatisfaction.Wewillrespondasquicklyaspossibleandofferwarmandtimelyservicesshouldanyissuesarise.

Wesayyouarethefirstownerofthecampus,wedontjustmeanyouarethefirstgroupofstudentsatDKUbutyouarealsothetrueownerofthecampus,co-foundersandadministrators.Withoutyou,thereisnowayforustobuildanddevelopouruniversity.OnescholaroncesaidthatuniversitymeansacademiccommunityinLatin.Itisacommunityoffaculty,scholarsandstudents.AsStevenBrintpointedoutin2022,Communitiesareaggregatesofpeoplewhosharecommonactivitiesand/orbeliefsandwhoareboundtogetherprincipallybyrelationsofaffect,loyalty,commonvalues,and/orpersonalconcern.InthiscommunityatDKU,nomatterwhereyouarefrom,whatyourbeliefsare,whetheryouarefacultyorstudents,academicswillbeourcommonlinkandwayofliving.Itisourcommongoaltopursueacademicfreedomandinnovation,academicpurityandintegrity.InthiscommunityatDKU,itisourcommonbelief"toservewithmyfeeblecapacitytruthandjustice',assaidbyEinstein,and"toapplyknowledgeinserviceofsociety',asadvocatedbyDukeUniversity.InthiscommunityatDKU,facultyandstudentsrespecteachother,careabouteachotherande*ploreknowledgeandtheunknowntogether.InhisspeechgivenatTsinghuaUniversity,PresidentBrodheadofDukeuniversitysaid,"Inthisconcept,facultymembersaree*plorersanddiscoverers,notprimarilyauthorityfigures;studentsandteachersaretheretosearchtogether;andeveryidea,howeverfinalitmayseem,notonlycanbe,butneedstobe,questioned,tested,reconsidered,forknowledgetokeepadvancing'.ThisiswhyatDKUwewelcomeandencouragestudentstoquestionfacultyandstaff,questiontheschoolandchancellors.Wedeeplybelievethatyourquestioningise*actlywhatwilladvanceDKU.

AmongthenewstudentsatDKU,wehave42studentsinthethreeMastersprograms.TheycomefromtendifferentcountriesincludingAmerica,Africa,EuropeandAsia.Amongthem,57%areChinesestudents,43%areinternationalstudentsfromdifferentcountries,including19%Americanstudents.IknowmostofyouareherebecauseofDukesworld-classeducationalresourcesandtheuniquecross-culturallearningenvironmentprovidedatDKU.Astimegoesby,youwillrealizeyouhaveabsolutelymadetherightdecision.Atthemoment,wehave32MMSstudentswhohavealreadyconcludedtheirorientationandstartedtheirclassesonDukeCampus.TheywilltravelbacktoDKUtofinishtheirstudyinne*tsemester.StudentsinothertwoMastersprogramswillalsohaveopportunitiestostudyatDukeforaboutasemester.AtDKU,studentswillhavethesameaccessasDukestudentstotheDukeonlinelibraryandotherresources,includinglabresourcesinthefuture.Ourinternationalteachingandcommunicationenvironmentwillprovideallstudentswithcross-boundarylearninge*periencesandfieldtripopportunities.Allstudentswillbeimmersedandwillgrowindifferentculturalandsocialenvironment.Thishard-wone*periencewillequipyouwithagreaterinternationalperspective.Youcandevelopyourcareerwithstrongerglobalcompetency.Ourtargetistocultivateglobalcitizenswhotakerootsintheirownnationalculture.Ourdefinitionofaglobalcitizeniswhorespects,understands,toleratesandappreciatesdifferentculturesandtraditions,abidesbythelawsofeachcountry,adherestothebeliefsoffreedom,equality,justiceandrighteousness,andiscapableofcommunicationininternationalcommonlanguages,andisacitizenwithastrongsenseofresponsibility,whocanservethewholeofhumanity.

Thisfall,wehavereceived62studentsforourUndergraduateGlobalLearningSemesterprogram.TheyaretopstudentsfromfamousuniversitiesinChina,AmericaandIndia,suchasDukeUniversity,ShivNadarUniversity,PekingUniversity,TsinghuaUniversity,FudanUniversity,NanjingUniversity,WuhanUniversity,etc.Here,IwouldliketowelcomeallofyouonbehalfofDKU.YourstudyatDKUmightbeasshortasonlyonesemester,butyouwillalwaysbeamemberofusandwillbecomeourlife-longalumni.Tojointhisprogrammeansmorethanthestudyofcourses,youwillalsogetatasteofAmericanliberalartseducationprovidedbyDukeUniversityandbee*posedtoadvancededucationalconceptsandpedagogyfromhighereducationpioneers,sothatyoucanbepreparedtotakeupaseriesofmajorchallengesfacedbyhumanbeingsintheconte*tofeconomicglobalization,scienceandtechnologyrevolutionandsocialtransformationinthe21stcentury.Youre*pectationofthisprogramise*actlywhywestarteditinthefirstplace.Duringthesemester,youwillunderstandthatmodernliberalartseducationteachesusHOWtolearnandthinkratherthanWHATtolearnandthink.Youwillalsobetterunderstandwhatastudent-orientedteachingapproachis,whatcross-culturalcommunicationis,whatfieldstudyis,whatself-studyandself-reflectionisandsoon.Allinall,thepurposeoftheliberalartseducationistograntstudents"independentspiritandfreethoughts'.ThisechoeswiththesayingofThomasJefferson,thethirdpresidentintheUS,"Fi*reasonfirmlyinherseat,andcalltohertribunaleveryfact,everyopinionyoumustlayasideallprejudiceonbothsides,andneitherbelievenorrejectanything,becauseanyotherpersons,ordescriptionofpersons,haverejectedorbelievedit.Yourownreasonistheonlyoraclegivenyoubyheaven,andyouareanswerable,notfortherightness,butuprightnessofthedecision.'

Dearstudents,thisisourDukeKunshanUniversity.World-classfacultyandoutstandingstudentswiththeshareddreamofcreatingaworld-classuniversityhavegatheredheretoday.DKUisanascentnewbornandneedsnurtureandcare.However
