ofthemobilephonesendingmostofthemawaytothejunkyards.

Aboutthattime,TonyInglis,engineeringandtransportcompanygotthejobtoremovephone

boxesfromthestreetsandsellthemout.ButInglisendedupbuyinghundredsofthemhimself,with

theideaofrepairingandsellingthem.Hesaidthathehadheardthecallstopreservetheboxesand

hadseenhowsomeofthemwerelistedashistoricbuildings.

AsInglisand,laterotherbusinessmen,gottowork,repurposedphoneboxesbeganreappearing

incitiesandvillagesaspeoplefoundnewusesforthem.Today,theyareonceagainafamiliarsight,

playingrolesthatareoftenjustasimportantforthecommunityastheiroriginalpurpose.

Inruralareas,whereambulancescantakearelativelylongtimetoarrive,thephoneboxeshave

takenonalifesavingrole.Localorganizationscanadoptthemfor1pound,andinstalldefibrillators

tohelpinemergencies.

Othersalsolookedatthephoneboxesandsawbusinessopportunities.LoveFone,acompany

thatadvocatesrepairingcellphonesratherthanabandoningthem,openedaminiworkshopina

Londonphoneboxin2016.

Thetinyshopsmadeeconomicsense,accordingtoRobertKerr,afounderofLoveFone.Hesaid

thatoneoftheboxesgeneratedaround$13,500inrevenueamonthandcostonlyabout$400torent.
