isthesmellofParkinson'snotbeingusedforearlydiagnosis?,,Hedidn'tanswerandweleft,disappointed.Butfour
monthslater,hecalledourhome.Hehadfoundmeafterrelayingmyquestiontoacolleague,whotoldhim,"You
mustfindher.^^Webegantoworkasateamtoprovemytheory.
WhenLesdiedin2015,hemademepromiseI'dcarryontheresearch.Ispenttimeinlabs,smellingsufferers
skinoilonswabs(棉签).IcoulddetectwhetherthepersonhadParkinson'swith95%accuracy.Thisyear,our
researchteampublishedabreakthrough:athree-minutetestthatcandetectthediseasebyrunningaswabalong
someone'sneck.
I'vebecomeknownanddeliveredmanylectures.I'mworkingondetectingcancersandtuberculosis.Inever
imagined,at72,thiswouldbemylift'swork.IconstantlythinkabouthowIlostmyLes,butalsohowIfinally
fulfilledmypromise.

Butwhalesarenotonlyvaluableindeath.Thetidesofexcrement(排泄物)thatwhalesproducearealso
surprisinglyrelevanttotheclimate.Theiriron-richexcrementcreatestheperfectgrowingconditionsfor
phytoplankton(浮游植物).Thesecreaturesmaybemicroscopic,but,takentogether,theyhaveagreatinfluenceon
theplanefsatmosphere,absorbingabout40%ofallCO2produced,fourtimestheamountabsorbedbytheAmazon
rainforest.
