tissueshrinkingsignificantly.

DevelopingtreatmentsforAlzheimer*shasbeenachallenge,withalmost20years

passingwithnonewdrugs.Butinthelastyear,twonewoneshaveemerged:

donanemabandlecanemab.Neitherarecuresormagicbulletsforthedisease,but

theydoaddresskeysymptoms.Theytargettheamyloidproteinsthatcanaccumulate

Partoftheproblemforme,asanacademic,inassessingthedrugisthatthefull

resultsofthetrialhaven,tyetbeensharedpubliclyorpublishedinapeer-review

journal.Wecannotaccessthefulldataorexaminethetrialyet,andthereisalwaysa

motivationforprivatecompaniestooverstatetheeffectivenessofnewdrugs.Trial

resultsneedtobeassessedbyanindependentbodyofexperts.

Whileitisunlikelytochangeclinicalpracticeuntilatleast2025,thenewsof

donanemabisagainanindicationthatscienceiscontinuingtomakeprogresswhenit

comestotreatingthemajorcausesofillnessanddeath,evenonerelatedtothehighly

complexinnerworkingsofthebrain.So,therearecaveatsandtheneedforcaution,
